Snoop Dogg's name is often featured in the league of iconic musicians in the modern world. Dogg is a rapper, record producer and actor. After embarking on a successful musical career, Snoop also opted for acting roles.
He debuted as an actor in the 1994 movie, Murder Was The Case, where he played the role of Silky Slim. From hip-hop documentaries to Academy-award winning crime thrillers, like Training Day, he has appeared in various films and television shows.
In 2019, Snoop was cast in a comedy film, The Beach Bum, which also featured Matthew McConaughey in the lead role. The movie directed by Harmonie Korine follows the life of poet Moondog played by McConaughey as he tries to finish a novel. The star-studded cast also includes Isla Fisher, Jimmy Buffett, Zac Efron and Martin Lawrence.
What role did Snoop Dogg play in The Beach Bum?
Well recognized for his extensive music over the past three decades, Snoop Dogg has also acted in more than 50 movies.
In Beach Bum, Snoop plays the role of Lingerie, also referred to as Rey. Lingerie is Moondog's close friend but also happens to have an affair with Moondog's wife (played by Isla Fisher).
In an interview with SXSW in 2019, Harmony Korine revealed that Snoop's character was originally written to be just "Snoop". Although the character is similar to Snoop's personality, Harmony revealed that Snoop had requested her to tweak the character. She said:
"Late at night, we were worried, it was like, 'Snoop has got some notes,' and I'm like, 'Okay'. He calls me up and he's like, 'I just want you to know I don't want to be Snoop in the movie, I want to be Lingerie because I'm smooth and silky.'"
Harmoney admitted that Snoop Dogg was going to be called by his name in the movie, like Jimmy Buffet, who plays himself in it. She reported that his "presence" continues to be felt in the movie and said:
"He's playing a variation of himself, but, at the same time, he's not really himself."
She also gave a hint that in the movie, the Young, Wild & Free singer is wearing clothes that say "Snoop."
The rapper also had a fair share of shenanigans on the set, especially with his co-star Matthew McConaughey. On The Jimmy Kimmel Live show, McConaughey and Snoop Dogg revealed that they got stoned during the filming. Thinking of the movie, Dogg said:
“I think the movie was a party.”
In one of the scenes, McConaughey was ready to shoot with a "prop joint made of oregano". However, during the filming, McConaughey felt unsure of the prop. That's when Snoop revealed:
"Yoh, Moondog. That wasn’t prop weed. That was Snoop weed.”
Snoop Dogg has left a significant mark in both the music and acting industry in the past few decades.
The singer has often played characters that are similar to himself, including the role in the Beach Bum. Dogg described in the film as a "party" and also played a prank on his co-star McConaughey by switching his prop joints with real ones.
