Snoop Dogg is a singer, entrepreneur, WWE Hall Of Famer, and actor. Three decades into his career, the 16-time Grammy Award nominee has acted in over 50 movies. Dogg debuted as an actor in 1994 and played Silky Slim in Murder Was The Case. From crime thrillers to comedy films, Snoop has been experimental with his movie roles.

In 2023, Snoop Dogg played the role of a coach in The Underdoggs. The comedy movie follows the life of a washed-up ex-professional football player who has been sentenced to community service coaching the Underdoggs. The coaching becomes an opportunity to connect to his old life and love for football. The Drop It Like It's Hot singer has also produced the movie and it holds a special meaning for the rapper.

Snoop Dogg talks about The Underdoggs and the inspiration behind it

Snoop Dogg plays the role of Two Js Jennings, an ex-professional football player who has hit rock bottom. In an attempt to win his high school sweetheart's heart, Cherise (played by actress Tika Sumpter), and rehabilitate his public image, Jennings becomes committed to helping the Underdoggs. The movie plays a special role in the rapper's life because in real life he has coached a football league since 2005.

The Snoop Youth Football League is a non-profit organization that was founded by the rapper and actor in 2005. According to the website, the organization has been dedicated to providing opportunities for inner-city children to participate in youth football.

To date, the organization has helped 60,000 children to participate in football and be trained by USA-certified football coaches. The organization served as a major inspiration for Snoop's The Underdoggs.

In an interview with Good Morning America's Michael Strahan, Snoop Dogg opened up about his experience with the movie and his personal journey from an "underdog to wonderdog." He said,

"I started off as an underdog, you know? That's the best dog to ever be, 'cause you the one that they don't pay attention to."

He added,

"So you gotta try to figure out how to master you to where you become the greatest you can be."

Football played an important role in Snoop Dogg's life while growing up. He told Michael that it was the "best thing that happened to" him as a kid. He explained,

"It taught me how to have discipline and to have respect. So I wanted to give some of that back that was given to me."

Just like his organization, Snoop did everything "right" for the movie. He said,

"I spent my money on brand new equipment, bought fields that we rented, referees, rule books, everything."

In an exclusive January 2024 interview with Moviefone, Snoop Dogg also revealed his experience as a producer. He said,

"As a producer, I wanted to make sure I didn't just come in here and just have a name, but have my hands involved, do some things, make some mistakes and get it right along the way."

In a three-decades-long career, Snoop Dogg has been awarded various accolades for his music creation. He has a multi-faceted career, where he has also worked as an actor and producer.

While Snoop served as a producer, The Underdoggs is directed by Charles Stone III and stars Tika Sumpter, Andrew Schulz, Mike Epps, Kal Penn, and others alongside Snoop Dogg. The Underdoggs is available for streaming on Prime Video and Apple TV+.
