Ever since her career as a rapper began, Nicki Minaj has distinguished herself from the crowd, be it in terms of music or fashion. Many other female rappers have followed the hairstyle trends initiated by Minaj.
While Minaj's natural hair color is black, over the years, she has sported almost every color - pink, blue, green, red, golden, blonde, platinum, dual-colored, as well as multi-colored looks.
The Pink Friday rapper is also bold in terms of her hair-dos, having experimented with Frankenstein wigs, high-top buns, and sleek and close-to-floor length rapunzel hair.
Nicki Minaj introduced the trend of pink hair in the rap industry
Talking about the hair trends of the rap industry with Essence Festival in April 2022, Nicki Minaj said:
"I remember I would never see any female rapper wearing pink hair... Pink hair became a part of that starter kit. Every female rapper will put on a pink wig."
A trendsetter for pink hair, Nicki Minaj's first hairstyle in 2009 was blunt black bangs combined with light pink undertones. The following year, Nicki sported a bright pink bob wig with blunt bangs at the 2010 MTV VMAs.
The same year, the rapper appeared with an angled, platinum wig with bright green tips at the American Music Awards.
In 2011, she arrived at the award show with another unique hairstyle - a half-and-half wig that was sapphire blue on one side and blonde on the other. Later that year, as she joined Lil Wayne on his I Am Music II tour, she was seen in a fluffy pink hair-do, with a large, cotton candy-like fluffy mane sitting atop her head.
Pink holds a significant value for the rapper, which is evident with its inclusion in most of her album titles. Talking about it on a Facebook Live session with Ellen Degeneres in 2016, Nicki Minaj said:
"I think it was the whole era of being obsessed with pink and just wearing pink hair. Whether I was wearing a pink wig, or just pink streaks in my hair, it became so synonymous with me that a lot of people gave me endorsement deals, so I think that actually helped me a lot in the long run."
At the 53rd Grammy Award, Nicki pulled off another iconic hairstyle - an animal print hair, with a large, blonde Frankenstein mane and a black streak running along its length. The ends of the wig were spotted with leopard prints to match the rest of her leopard-printed couture outfit designed by Givenchy.
Nicki Minaj tweeted about wearing her natural hair at the MTV VMAs 2016
Nicki Minaj first embraced her natural hair on screen in 2014, with the release of her third studio album - The Pinkprint. From that point onwards, the artist was often spotted in her natural hair, in a long, jet-black straightened hairstyle. Her look in the 2016 MTV VMAs was all-natural, about which she also tweeted later.
Soon after the award show, Nicki started wearing her hair long and straight with a middle parting, which created a trend in itself. In 2022, the Hey Mama rapper posted selfies of her natural hair, no makeup look on Instagram, where her hair was tied in a sleek, pulled-back ponytail, which attracted praises and comments from her fans.
Nicki Minaj was seen sporting her natural long, black hair in most concerts of her ongoing Pink Friday 2 tour. With the release date of her sixth studio album imminent, fans are eager to find out whether the upcoming music videos will feature her natural hair or a new hairstyle.
