Austin Richard Post, popularly known as Post Malone has made his name in the music industry. When the Circle singer's old video re-surfaced on the Internet in 2016, fans wondered if it was his alter ego. The music video features Leon DeChino (Malone's alter ego) dancing and singing to Why Don't You Love Me.
In a 2017 video for Genius's Video Series, Verified, Malone talked about his song Patient and explained its lyrics. In one line, Malone mentioned DeChino and said,
"Shoutout to my alter ego. He's Leon DeChino."
Malone revealed that DeChino may be from "Columbia or Romania" and called him a "legend."
Does Post Malone have more than one alter ego? Rapper talks about their creation
Why Don't You Love Me's music video was shot by Malone as part of a school project while attending Grapevine High School in Grapevine, Texas. In a 2016 conversation with The Breakfast Club, the rapper revealed that he had originally created the song for a high school art project when he was 17. The Sunflower singer also added that he got an "A" on his project.
Apart from his song Patient, the name DeChino has also appeared on his song Psycho featuring TY Dolla $ign. The song is a single from his album, Beerbongs & Bentleys, and also debuted at No.2 on Billboard Hot 100. While Why Don't You Love Me is not an official video and was never meant to be released, it has been viewed over 14 million times on YouTube.
Leon DeChino is not the only alter ego Malone had in the past. Back in January 2020, Doritos rebranded Post Malone as Post Limon as part of a new marketing campaign for its new product, Doritos Flamin’ Hot Limón chips.
In a video shared by Doritos on YouTube, Malone is spotted getting a tattoo of a Dorito chip on his face that goes with his impressive pre-existing collection of facial tattoos. He can be seen donning a Post Limón-emblazoned suit. In an interview with UpRoxx in 2020, Malone talked about his collaboration with Doritos and revealed that he was more than happy to do the commercial since he "loves Doritos" and can "eat a whole bag."
He further explained the project,
"They said the new flavor is Hot Limon, and Post Malone and Hot Limon switch over perfectly. It just worked out perfect and I’m really excited for people to try the chips and check out the commercial. We had a lot of fun doing it."
After the commercial debuted, the Sunflower singer also changed the display name on his social media accounts to Post Limon. While Leon DeChino and Post Limon have been temporary alter egos of Post Malone, he has enjoyed every bit of his identity.
Although Leon DeChino is no longer part of Malone's persona, it may have just set the foundation of his career. Why Don't You Love Me is also a testament to Post Malone's journey from creating music for a high school project to delivering award-winning singles. While Leon DeChino's video was not supposed to be released, Malone is proud of his alter ego and has also called him a legend.
