Fugees bandmates Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean had a complicated relationship. Hill met Jean in high school, and together with Pras Michel, they formed the hip-hop group the Fugees. Although the Fugees disbanded in 1997, Jean did not fully address their relationship until years later.
In his autobiography, Purpose, Wyclef Jean stated that he and Hill began dating in the early years of the Fugees. Despite the huge success of the band's album, The Score, Hill and Jean's relationship remained tumultuous. When Hill became pregnant with her first child, Jean alleged that Hill made him believe that he was the father.
What did Wyclef Jean say about his relationship with Lauryn Hill?
As a hip-hop trio, the Fugees shot to fame in the 1990s. Despite their success, the trio disbanded after releasing two studio albums. While the bandmates' relationship was public, the reasons were not clarified. In his autobiography, Purpose, Wyclef Jean revealed that his affair with Lauryn Hill continued after he married designer Marie Claudinette.
Jean later stated that Hill started seeing Rohan Marley around that time. He alleged that Lauryn Hill made him believe that she was pregnant with his child, although Rohan Marley was Lauryn's first-born's real father.
In an excerpt from his autobiography, Wyclef Jean talks about his relationship with Lauryn after the paternity news was revealed. He wrote:
"In that moment something died between us. I was married and Lauryn and I were having an affair, but she led me to believe that the baby was mine, and I couldn’t forgive that."
He added:
"She could not longer be my muse. Our love spell was broken."
In an interview with Strombo to promote his autobiography, Wyclef Jean emphasized that he doesn't want to be "blamed" for someone's future (referring to Lauryn Hill). He also noted that he was ready to take responsibility for the fallout with Lauryn Hill. He told MTV News:
"Two wrongs don't make a right, so I accepted my wrong for that period and being an adolescent, being kind of cocky."
There was no official comment from Lauryn after Wyclef's autobiography was released. However, while touring with Nas, during the Life Is Good/Black Rage tour, Lauryn reportedly made a subtle comment about her relationship with Wyclef. She asked her fans to be "careful" about what they judge. She stated:
"A lot of deception out there. A lot of misunderstanding out there. A lot of miscommunication out there. A lot of false information out there. A whole lot and notice after all the people that just talk, talk, talk, who’s the silent one? And you know why?"
She added:
"Let me tell you why I don’t really chat back. Because I know that my brothers and my sisters are often times pawns in a bigger scheme. So when they, under pressure, attack me I love them still."
It is unclear when Lauryn and Wyclef Jean reunited for professional work. They performed a few times in the early 2000s. Their major reunion was marked by the 25th anniversary of their second album, The Score.
