Rihanna’s journey to becoming a billionaire and estimated career earnings

In May 2005, Rihanna made her debut in the music industry with the release of the studio version of the single, Pon de Replay. The singer went on to release nine studio albums and has sold over 250 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling female artists of all time.

The singer has gone on successful world tours including the Loud Tour, which grossed an estimated $90 million according to BET, and the Diamonds Tour, which raked in more than $140 million according to Billboard.

According to Roc Nation’s website, the Barbadian native has sold more than 60 million albums and 215 million digital tracks. According to Billboard, the singer earned $2.5 million from sales, $7.6 million from streaming, and $10.1 million in royalties in 2016.

The fashion idol also bagged collaborative deals with leading fashion brands like Puma in 2014, Dior in 2016 (most recently in June 2024), and Chopard, amongst others. According to Forbes estimations in June 2017, the nine-time Grammy Award winner scored a third of her $36 million pretax earnings in 2016 from endorsements and ranked number 77 on the Celebrity 100 list of top-earning entertainers of 2016.

In 2017, Rihanna launched her popular beauty brand, Fenty Beauty, in partnership with luxury goods conglomerate, LVMH, which became one of Time’s best inventions that year. The brand reportedly made over $72 million in just over a month of its launch and according to Forbes estimations in 2024, Fenty Beauty is valued at $2.8 billion and accounts for the bulk of the singer’s earnings.

The beauty brand which grew popular for its broad inclusivity of various skin tones, launched her into billionaire status in 2021. The singer has since added brands, Fenty Skin in 2020 and Fenty Hair in 2024, under the Fenty Beauty umbrella.

Speaking on her billionaire status, in an interview with The New York Times in September 2021, the Fenty mogul said:

“It’s tricky because it’s hard to even accept that’s where you’re at because I know where I’ve come from. At the same time, it feels good to be able to inspire young women and boys, who like me, come from humble beginnings, who come from parents who are immigrants or who are immigrants themselves, to be able to do this.”

The Barbadian native also spoke on how she planned to use her wealth to further her charity causes through her Clara Lionel Foundation, saying:

“Every dollar I make, I want to give it back. When it comes to people who need help, it hurts when I can’t do as much as I want, so now we’re just putting our foot down and C.L.F. is about to grow in a way that I’m really proud of."

The rest of Rihanna’s earnings are largely due to Rihanna’s lingerie company Savage X Fenty, which she co-founded in 2018 with TechStyle fashion group. According to Forbes's estimate in 2024, Rihanna boasts a 28% stake in the billion-dollar company.

In 2021, Square acquired majority shares in Tidal, a company co-owned by Rihanna and other celebrities like Jay-Z and Beyonce, amongst others, for $297 million. Her 3% stake in the company reportedly fetched her an estimated profit of $8.9 million.

The superstar also boasts an impressive real estate portfolio with a California condo that costs an estimated $5.2 million, properties in Beverly Hills valued at $23.8 million, and a property in Hollywood Hills reportedly worth $6.8 million, amongst others.

Rihanna's wealth alludes to her work ethic, entrepreneurial skills, and a successful musical career.
