Harry Styles is an English singer and actor who rose to fame with the band One Direction. In June 2016, Styles signed a solo contract with Columbia Records and released his first-titled studio album in 2017. Styles made his feature debut in Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk in July 2017. Other movies that Styles has featured in are Don't Worry Darling (2022), My Policeman (2022), and Eternals (2021).
In 2019, the Watermelon Sugar singer reportedly declined the part in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the reimagined Disney classic, the director, Rob Marshall, revealed that he had initially met Harry Styles for the role of Prince Eric. Marshall called Styles a "wonderful guy" and reported that he had respectfully declined the role. He explained,
"At the end of the day, he really felt like he wanted to go off and do the movies that he ended up doing, which were sort of darker."
What genre of movies is Harry Styles opting for?
Harry Styles was juggling between his singing and acting roles when he was asked to play Prince Eric in Disney's The Little Mermaid in 2019. The role was eventually offered to Jonah Hauer King, who starred opposite Halle Bailey (Ariel). In the conversation with Entertainment Weekly, Rob Marshall explained why Harry Styles did not go ahead with the role.
"For a lot of young musical people like Harry, you're trying to carve your way, and you don't want to be seen as a singer, necessarily."
He added,
"That's why he was really looking to do something not in the musical genre, to really stretch himself. It was really a fun idea to play with, but in the end, I always think things happen for a reason."
Although Harry Styles did not opt to work in The Little Mermaid, Marshall reported that he was "very happy" to work with "young" and "new" people in the film. The film was released in the United States on May 26, 2023. Along with Halle Bailey, other actors featured in the film were Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, Awkwafina as Scuttle, and David Diggs as Sebastian.
At the same time, Styles told Rolling Stone that he is focusing on "music" and continued the international tour of his 2022 album, Harry's House. He explained,
"A large part of acting is the doing nothing, waiting thing. Which, if that's the worst part, then it's a pretty good job. But I don't find that section of it to be that fulfilling. I like doing it in the moment, but I don't think I'll do it a lot."
While Harry Styles turned down the role for Little Mermaid, he accepted the supporting roles in Don't Worry Darling and the queer drama, My Policeman.
Styles declined to play in Little Mermaid since he reportedly wanted to opt for more "darker" genres. He later played a supporting role in the psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling by Olivia Wilde. More recently, apart from acting, Harry Styles has ventured into fashion with his exclusive collaboration with Selfridges, titled Wet, Hot, Pleasing Summer, for Summer 2024.
