Ariana Grande was eight years old when her parents - Joan Grande and Edward Butera - got separated, filing for a divorce. The singer has since lived with her mother, and despite her parents remaining friends, Ari's own relationship with her father has seen its ups and downs.
Ariana Grande had a falling out with Edward Butera in 2013, which she opened up in a 2014 Seventeen interview. When asked what was the toughest thing she had ever dealt with, Grande said, "Falling out of touch with my dad."
While the Positions singer did not reveal the details of the fallout, it apparently took her a "long" time to come to terms with it. However, the father-daughter duo reconciled several years down the road, with Edward Butera attending his daughter's wedding to Dalton Gomez in 2021.
Ariana Grande's father is the founder and creative head of IBI Designs Inc. - a graphic design firm in Boca Raton, Florida.
Ariana Grande revealed that she shared many of her father's "traits"
Further in her Seventeen interview, Ariana Grande said:
"It's private, but it happened last year. It took me so long to be okay with it."
Grande then went on to say how it took her some time to bring herself to accept that her father was an important part of who she was, regardless of whether she liked it or not, adding:
"The thing that got me there was embracing the fact that I am made up of half my dad, and a lot of my traits come from him. So much of me comes from my father, and for so long, I didn't like that about myself. I had to accept that it's okay not to get along with somebody and still love them."
In November 2018, Ariana Grande released the lead single from her upcoming album of the same name - Thank U, Next. The track, while largely talking about Ari's past relationships, also hinted at her take on her parent's divorce, in the following lines:
"One day I'll walk down the aisle/ Holding hands with my mama/ I'll be thanking my Dad/ 'Cause she grew from the drama."
However, despite the differences, the two reconciled over the years.
Butera joined the 7 Rings singer in Europe for her Thank U, Next tour in 2019. The same year, Ari celebrated Thanksgiving with both her parents after a long time, sharing it in an Instagram story with the caption:
"First Thanksgiving with both of my parents in 18 years."
The following year, Grande took both her parents with her to the Annual Grammy Awards. As she performed her hit track Thank U, Next at the award show that year, Ari also altered the part about her parents, changing it to:
"I'll be thanking my dad/ 'Cause he's really awesome."
In May 2021, Ariana Grande married Dalton Gomez in an intimate wedding at her home in Montecito, California. The ceremony, held during the COVID pandemic, included both her parents by her side. The couple, however, got divorced two years later.
The following month, the Side to Side singer celebrated Father's Day by sharing a picture with Butera on her Instagram handle, alongside a long caption. According to Billboard, the caption of the since-deleted Instagram post read:
“i love you endlessly @edbutera. i cherish every moment of our time together, i cherish our facetimes, your laugh ! making you laugh ! i cherish the parts of me that remind me of you (there are very many). they make me smile. you make me smile. i love you and i am deeply grateful for your being in my life and proud to be your daughter everyday ~ happy father’s day.”
Edward Butera, on his part, appears to be an extremely proud father, sharing pictures with Grande - both current as well as of her childhood - and of her achievements constantly on his social media handle. His current display picture on Instagram is also with Ari from their time together at the Grammys back in 2020, with the term "Father" placed first on his bio.
