In 2015, Katy Perry headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, making her part of a special group of artists. Her 13-minute performance, featuring Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott, became the most-watched halftime show in history, with 121 million viewers (via CNBC).

The show included a medley of her biggest hits, along with pyrotechnics, a 3D model of the stadium, dancing sharks, fake palm trees, an animatronic lion, and other unique props to captivate the audience.

After the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks provided an exciting end to the first half, it was up to Katy Perry to keep the energy high. She teamed up with Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott for one of the most memorable Super Bowl Halftime Shows ever.

Perry took the stage riding an animatronic lion with glowing red eyes, wearing a fire-themed dress to perform her hit Roar. She then performed her 2014 hit Dark Horse on a 3D-rendered Super Bowl field that looked like a chessboard.

Katy Perry followed it up with a quick costume change for a childish rendition of Teenage Dream.

After a while, Perry invited Missy Elliott and Lenny Kravitz on stage, vibing with the two as the three sang one hit after another. Lenny and Katy combined to sing the 2008 chartbuster I Kissed A Girl while Katy Perry sang a remix of Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.) with Missy Elliott.

Although Katy Perry appeared to sing most of her songs live, she admitted that some portions were pre-recorded to accommodate her costume changes and other movements during the show, as reported by ForTheWin in 2015.

It has been nine years since Katy Perry dropped her record-breaking performance at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, but the experience is still as clear as crystal in her memory. The Roar singer opened up about her experience in a Vogue Life in Looks interview in 2023.

Reflecting on that performance, Perry described it as the most "intense" feeling of her life.

"Playing the Super Bowl was really the most intense feeling ever," Perry said. "But I was like 'Oh, this must be the feeling before you give birth or when you're on the edge of death."

She also discussed her favorite outfit from that night - a red, silver, yellow, and blue crop top and skirt set with matching red lipstick and a hairband. The singer wore that dress roughly four minutes into her twelve-and-a-half-minute set. Even her microphone was painted with the same colors as her dress.

"This [the look] was a collaboration with Jeremy Scott, with myself, and Johnny Wujek," said Perry.

Johnny Wujek is an Emmy-award-winning costume designer while Jeremy Scott was the former creative director of Moschino.

"It takes after the classic primary color beach ball you see during summer and at the beach," Perry added.

Perry's 2015 Super Bowl Halftime performance still holds the record of the most-viewed Super Bowl Halftime performance of all time. For comparison, her Prismatic Tour roughly drew two million audiences across 105 shows. The 13-minute Super Bowl Halftime show was watched by 121 million.
