Lauryn Hill reached the top of the hip-hop charts with her solo music career. However, she began her career in the music industry with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel when they formed the group the Fugees in 1992. However, the group decided to part ways and start their respective solo careers in music in 1997.
In his autobiography Purpose, Wyclef Jean revealed the reason behind the Fugees' breakup. He explained that his difficult relationship with Lauryn ultimately led to her leaving the group. Although all three singers have pursued their solo careers, they have occasionally reunited to celebrate their past albums.
Lauryn Hill's history with the Fugees explored
Lauryn Hill grew up with a family that supported her passion for music. Before pursuing a professional music career, she acted on the television show, As The World Turns and appeared in the movie, Sister Act. Although she had an interest in acting, she wanted to pursue music full-time.
Lauryn Hill met her Fugees bandmates in high school, where she took on the role of lead vocalist and songwriter. According to the Achievement, Lauryn and her group performed informally around New York and submitted recordings to record companies. With the money she earned from her acting roles, she helped finance her hip-hop group, which eventually was signed to a division of Columbia Records in 1993.
The group released their first album, Blunted On Reality, in 1994. The album was not commercially successful and sold only 12,000 copies within two years of its release. Thirty years later, after its release, Wyclef Jean talked to Vice in Feb 2024 about the album. He said:
"What’s amazing about Blunted on Reality was it gave us the ability to take our time and learn and to adjust and grow from where we was at."
Wyclef revealed that people in America called their music "trash." He added:
"While they’re saying that, we’re somewhere in Germany, still planting that seed. We wasn’t looking at Blunted on Reality, we were looking at it as an introduction of where we wanted to go."
In 1996, the Fugees released their second album, The Score, which catapulted their position in the hip-hop industry. Despite winning Grammys, the group split in 1997. According to Wyclef, he and Hill experienced a troublesome relationship. At that time, Lauryn also met Bob Marley's son Rohan and fell in love with him.
In his autobiography Purpose, Wyclef alleged that Lauryn tried to convince him that her first son, Zion was his. However, it was later found that Zion's real father was Rohan Marley. This ultimately led the trio to lead their solo careers. In an interview with Achievement in June 2000, Lauryn Hill addressed the separation. She attributed it primarily to individual "differences." She said:
"I think everything happens in time. There’s a time for everything. There’s a time to be in a group, and there’s a time to be solo. At least there was for me. If I had had it my way, I would have been in the group forever."
Lauryn Hill reunited with the Fugees in 2021 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Score. While they have not released new music, they have occasionally performed together.
