Rihanna is a world-renowned singer, beauty mogul and actress. The Umbrella singer's fashion has evolved over the years and she has sported various hairstyles. From an asymmetrical bob to a sleek bun and long-textured waves, she has pulled off numerous hairstyles. For her role in Ocean's 8, RiRi wore faux dreadlocks, which also held a special meaning for the singer. The Barbados-born singer's hair for the movie was done by her long-term hair stylist, Yusef Williams.

Ocean's 8 has a star-studded cast, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter and Awkwafina. While Bullock and Blanchett are often spotted in business suits and ballgowns, Rihanna has the most casual look. RiRi keeps it real and proudly dons her dreads.

Ocean's 8 is a 2018 heist comedy film that follows the life of a group of women who plan a sophisticated heist at the annual Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. RiRi plays Nine Ball, a hacker who becomes part of the sophisticated heist. RiRi took to her Instagram to share a glimpse of her character in the movie.

RiRi's locks catches the audience's attention. In discussions about the Fenty Beauty founder's hair, it was revealed that it was a very intentional decision for RiRi to sport dreadlocks.

At a press conference in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur, the film’s director Gary Ross talked about the first time Rihanna and he discussed Nine Ball’s costume. Ross wanted to lean her into her "Caribbean roots" and said:

“We both love Bob Marley, and I mentioned dreadlocks and she jumped up and down."

It was subsequently decided that RiRi would don a military green jacket. He added:

"This is just different than Rihanna gets to be in most her public appearances, and she really loved all that.”

In a conversation with Refinery29, RiRi's long-term hairstylist Yusef Williams revealed that Gary Ross had given him and Rihanna a lot of "creative freedom." Williams talked about the importance of RiRi's hair in the movie and her connection to Africa. He said,

“Her locks would maintain that tie to Africa. She’d keep her accent. She wasn’t just going to be some American girl in this movie. Nine Ball is still a Caribbean girl that just happens to be in America.”

While Rihanna wears similar clothes over and over again in the movie, she "cared most about her hair." Williams added,

“When people have locs, it’s kind of like their crown. It’s their pride and joy. It’s like a flower ... you gotta nourish it and watch it grow. Hair played a really big part in who Nine Ball came to be.”

Rihanna's character, Nine Ball, sports dreadlocks and military green jackets across the film. The role and her hairstyle are special to RiRi and are representations of her African culture and Caribbean roots. While RiRi continuously experiments with her hairstyles, her hairstylist revealed that she is most comfortable in her original hair or locs.
