The American hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy was formed in 2009 and later dissolved in 2022. However, one of the band's fans, rapper Chuck D, seemingly wants them to get back. He took to X on Sunday, May 12, 2024, to request the band's former member Kendrick Lamar to get the band back together.

In his tweet, he said that he "would love to see" Kendrick giving the band "life again."

"I’m still waiting for #BlackHippy.. loved the name mcs and the music. I dig rap groups and collectives that is no secret. I would love to see @kendricklamar give it life again," Chuck tweeted.

The supergroup consisted of four members- Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and ScHoolboy Q. However, after Lamar left the band in 2022, it ended up dissolving completely.

Former hip-hop supergroup Black Hippy members' current lives explored

The group Black Hippy was formed in 2009 but dissolved completely in 2022 after Kendrick Lamar left. The band was operational till 2016 when all the members signed with Top Dawg Entertainment, where their individual careers flourished. However, Lamar cut ties with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2022, which led to the disbandment of Black Hippy.

The supergroup never officially announced their split but they haven't released a project in over five years. It is also worth noting that the group never dropped a studio album, they were still considered a popular hip-hop band of the 2010s.

Chuck D's latest tweet about wanting the band to get back together has sparked an interest among fans who want to know where the four members are.

1) Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar was the rapper for the supergroup and one of the most popular members as well. He has recently gained infamy for his ongoing beef with Canadian rapper Drake. Lamar finished his The Big Steppers Tour in March 2024, which began in June 2022.

Over the past few years, Kendrick Lamar has seen immense success and received several awards, including 17 Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize. Some of his most famous songs are HUMBLE. and ELEMENT.

Lamar is also the founder of pgLang, a company specializing in music and visual media production. The company was established in 2020, along with Dave Free.

2) Jay Rock

The 39-year-old rapper from Los Angeles was on vocals for Black Hippy. He has one Grammy for his song King's Dead, which was released in 2018.

That same year, he also released his studio album Redemption, which featured Kendrick Lamar but made no mention of Black Hippy. In 2023, he released a song Blowfly, featuring Ab-Soul.

Jay's upcoming album Eastside Johnny is expected to be released on June 27, 2024.

3) Ab-Soul

The rapper, who was born in Carson, California, was also a rapper with the supergroup. He signed with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2007.

The last studio album he released was Herbert in 2022. In that same year, Ab-Soul also spoke about his struggles with mental health and drugs. In an interview with Charlamagne tha God, he spoke about trying to end his life on one occasion.

"I jumped off a freeway overpass, man, it was about 50 feet. I think a car broke my fall. No brain damage. It’s God. That was, ‘Alright bro, now sit down and shut up. Take it all in. Relax. You blessed, man',” the rapper said.

However, later, he did confirm that he was in a better place after the incident.

4) ScHoolboy Q

The rapper from South LA was on vocals in Black Hippy and released his first mixtape ScHoolboy Turned Hustla in 2008. Soon after that, he signed with Top Dawg Entertainment and began working with Jay Rock and Ab-Soul in Black Hippy.

Since the supergroup's informal split in 2016, ScHoolboy Q has released two studio albums. In 2019, he released Crash Talk, which featured several artists including Travis Scott, Kid Cudi, and 21 Savage.

His latest and sixth album Blue Lips was dropped in March 2024 and involved a guest appearance of Ab-Soul, his former Black Hippy bandmate.

Rapper ScHoolboy Q revealed that he didn't think there would be a reunion anytime soon

Despite Chuck D's plea to Kendrick Lamar to bring back and reunite Black Hippy, the reunion might not be happening for a while. ScHoolboy Q appeared on The Danny Brown Show on April 12, 2024, where he spoke about the former members of the supergroup. He noted that they were all busy in their lives and that he didn't see a possibility of Black Hippy reuniting anytime soon.

"I think we’re all kind of on our separate paths right now. Dot is doing his own thing with pgLang. I’m doing my own thing, curating a new artist. I did that part already, I gotta have this second part ’cause I got like 18 more albums to make," the rapper said.

He went on to add that he was trying to "figure out this phase" before getting to the "third phase." ScHoolboy Q also discussed how Ab-Soul and Jay Rock were both working and how he doesn't see the group having the time for a reunion.

Therefore, while Chuck D and several fans might be eager to see the hip-hop supergroup reunite, it might not be a possibility anytime soon.
