Actor-standup comedian D.L. Hughley recently called out singer-songwriter Janet Jackson after the latter claimed during her recent interview with The Guardian that Kamala Harris is "not Black." Hughley took to the social media platform X on September 22 and wrote:
“It's a little ironic to question whether someone is black while you're breathing through the nose of a white woman!”
Janet Jackson raised doubts about the Democratic presidential candidate's ethnic background during her September 21 sit-down with The Guardian, where she claimed that she was “told” that Harris’ father is “white.” While she was uncertain about the authenticity of the information, Janet still went ahead with her remark.
“Well, you know what they supposedly said?” ‘She’s not Black.’ That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian.”
When the interviewer corrected her, saying that Kamala Harris is both Indian and Black, Jackson shot back, alleging that the Vice President’s father is neither; instead, he is “white.”
Kamala Harris’ opponent, Donald Trump, made similar comments during an interview at the National Association of Black Journalists convention earlier this year. He claimed Harris “turned Black” to cement her political career.
“She was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black… Is she Indian or is she Black?” the former President commented.
Exploring DL Hughley’s comments on Janet Jackson
In an interview with The Guardian, published on September 21, Janet Jackson raised concern that the November presidential election will result in “mayhem.” When asked how she felt about the USA on the verge of electing the first female Black President, the 58-year-old claimed that Kamala Harris is “not Black” but rather half-Indian and half-white (from her father’s side).
“Her father’s white. That’s what I was told. I mean, I haven’t watched the news in a few days. I was told that they discovered her father was white,” Janet Jackson claimed.
The interviewer, Nosheen Iqbal, insisted on Kamala Harris’ ethnic background, saying she has a “dual heritage.” When he asked Janet whether she agreed that “she’s Black” or rather “a woman of color,” she replied:
“I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t want to answer that because I really, truthfully, don’t know. I think either way it goes is going to be mayhem… I think there might be mayhem. Either way, it goes, but we’ll have to see.”
In the wake of her now-viral comments on Kamala Harris’ roots, Janet Jackson faced criticism online. Comic and actor DL Hughley also joined the conversation and called out The Jacksons member.
He said that not only did Janet’s interview appear like a Donald Trump campaign rally, but it was ironic how Jackson was questioning the race of Kamala Harris when she allegedly got a nose job done on herself, which seemed to be of a white woman’s.
Notably, the speculation of Janet Jackson getting plastic surgery has been circulating for a few years. However, she has never publicly confirmed the same.
DL Hughley doubled down in his follow-up post and said:
“#KamalaHarris looks the way she does cuz she has mom from India and a dad from Jamaica! #JanetJackson looks the way she does cuz she has a plastic surgeon.”
The former ComicView host also wrote how Harris looks the same as she did when she lived in her native place in Oakland, California. However, he said Janet Jackson doesn’t look like she did when she played the role of Millicent “Penny” Gordon Woods in the CBS sitcom Good Times that ran from 1974 to 1979.
For those unaware, Kamala Harris’ father, Donald J. Harris, is an economist and emeritus professor at Standford University who is a Jamaican immigrant. He moved to the USA to pursue higher education. Likewise, her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was an Indian immigrant who was a biomedical scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. She passed away from cancer in 2009.
An unauthorized apology from Janet Jackson has surfaced
Following Janet Jackson’s comments and the ensuing backlash, a person named Mo Elmasri claimed to be the singer's manager and issued an unauthorized apology on her behalf.
“Janet Jackson would like to clarify her recent comments. She recognizes that her statements regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity were based on misinformation. Janet respects Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian and apologizes for any confusion caused,” Elmasri stated.
“She values the diversity Harris represents and understands the importance of celebrating that in today’s society. Janet remains committed to promoting unity and understanding.”
However, Janet’s representatives told Variety that she had not issued any apology, and Mo Elmasri was not her manager. Instead, her brother Randy has been managing her for years. Meanwhile, Mo told the outlet that he was “fired” by the Jacksons for trying to “improve her (Janet's) image in front of public opinion and her fans” and did not “deserve” the treatment.
Elmasri’s IMDb bio identifies him as an Egyptian filmmaker and the founder of 24 East Agency, a consulting firm. He is also listed as a “creative consultant” for Janet Jackson and other “global superstars,” including Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Selena Gomez. He is also listed as an executive producer on Jackson’s forthcoming documentary Janet Jackson: Family First.
