On October 16, 2024, Liam Payne tragically passed away at the age of 31. The former 1D singer was on vacation in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy. Payne fell from the balcony of his hotel room (located on the third floor), losing his life in the process.
Following Payne's death, his former One Direction bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, shared heartfelt tributes on Instagram handles.
However, a TikToker recently pointed out that, apart from Louis Tomlinson, none of the other members followed Liam on Instagram, while he followed everybody. The viral TikTok video has raised questions among the netizens about how close the bandmates truly were.
Zayn Malik and Harry Styles once unfollowed everyone, including Liam Payne
Three days ago, a TikTok user by the name of @starg111rll uploaded a video featuring herself looking somber, with 1D's Moments playing in the background. The message in the video said:
"Harry unfollowed everyone, Zayn did too. Louis was the only one following Liam. Not even Niall, who Liam was in Argentina to see originally. Niall followed everyone except Liam."
The observation shocked many TikTokers, leading the video to go viral within days. It is true that Zayn Malik and Harry Styles were following zero accounts on the platform some years ago. However, both singers are currently following a few accounts, but none of them include their former bandmates.
Niall Horan, who follows Malik, Styles, and Tomlinson, doesn't follow Liam Payne back, despite Payne following him. This has surprised many fans, especially since one of the reasons for the Strip That Down singer's visit to the country was reportedly to attend Horan's concert. He was seen at the show by many fans on October 2.
Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne were the only One Direction members who followed all their bandmates. While the revelation leads fans to question if the others were even close with the Both Ways singer following the band's split, Payne believed otherwise.
In a YouTube video uploaded by Liam Payne on July 3, 2023, the singer shared his appreciation for his bandmates, saying:
"The rest of the boys really stuck by me when I needed them most, they kinda came to the rescue. Even Zayn, as well, which is why I did send him a little thank you online."
Former 1D members released joint statement about Liam Payne's death on the band's Instagram handle
In addition to the personal tributes made by the 1D members, they also released a joint statement on the band's Instagram handle following Liam Payne's death, saying:
"We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly."
The statement continued:
"The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."
It was signed by all four 1D members - Louis, Zayn, Niall, and Harry.
The five members first met in 2010 as contestants on The X Factor, where they were chosen to form the band. One Direction, active from 2011 to 2015, is considered the best-selling boy band of all time. It dissolved in 2016 after Zayn Malik reportedly left the group to pursue a solo career, prompting others to do the same.
