Who is Harry Styles' godchild? All about Ruby Winston who featured on singer's hit track As It Was

Harry Styles debuted as a singer on The X Factor in 2010 and became a part of the boyband, One Direction. While the band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2016, Styles continued to work on his musical projects and has pursued various acting roles. The singer has released three albums as a solo artist including, Harry Styles (2017), Fine Line (2019), and Harry's House (2022).

In 2017, Style's Sign Of The Times became his first solo to top the UK Singles Chart. In 2022, As It Was became his second single to clinch the first position on the UK Singles Chart and stayed for over ten weeks.

It also became a chart-topper on Billboard Hot 100 and reigned for 15 consecutive weeks, becoming the longest-running No.1 track. Interestingly, the song featured Styles's godchild, Ruby Winston, who is the voice behind the opening of As It Was.

How is Ruby Winston related to Harry Styles?

Harry Style's goddaughter, Ruby Winston was just 5 when she voiced the opening of As It Was. The song starts with:

"Come on Harry, we want to say goodnight to you!"

Ruby is Ben Winston and his wife Meredith's elder daughter. Her parents named Harry as his godfather. Ben is the executive producer of shows from The Late Late Show with James Corden and Hulu’s The Kardashians. People magazine reported that he first met Harry when the latter was part of One Direction.

In an interview with iHeart Radio in April, 2022, Harry Styles revealed how Ruby's voice made its way to the hit single. He said:

“She had a streak of calling me every night."

Styles added:

“I missed it one night and she wanted to let me know that she was quite angry with me.”

In a January 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ben said that he was proud of his daughter's contribution to the song and noted that it was recorded while "sitting on the toilet."

In another conversation with Capital Breakfast’s Roman Kemp in April 2022, host Roman pointed out that Harry will "have to share a Grammy with her if it wins" and Harry joked:

“She was asking for a big fee – it’s all gone downhill.”

Ben and Harry Styles share a close relationship as the former worked on a few One Direction videos and also produced their documentary film, This is Us. The producer told Rolling Stone in April 2017 that the singer stayed in their attic in suburban London. He added:

"Even when we went out for a meal, it’s such a sweet family neighborhood, no one dreamed it was actually him. But he made our house a home. And when he moved out, we were gutted."

While Harry Styles performed As It Was during the 2023 Grammy Awards, his granddaughter was not allowed to accompany him. In a conversation with Entertainment Weekly just before the show in January, Ben Winston revealed that Ruby didn't have permission to perform on stage then. He said:

“What I can tell you is that if Ruby Winston is asked to perform, she 100 percent will. However, I will never allow that to happen."

The singer added:

“As much as she would love it, it's never going to happen.”

He elaborated that although Ruby didn't know how "big" her contribution was, it was a very "lovely thing" and probably she will recognize it when she is "25."
