American singer, songwriter, producer, and former model Kacy Hill has been performing on her The Bug Tour. Last week, during one of her shows, the Experience songstress shared with the audience how she left Kanye West’s GOOD Music label, founded in 2004.
Kacy Hill explained that she wanted to leave the label in 2019 after waiting over two years to release her second album with them. She said she approached Def Jam Records with the offer, as they handled distribution for GOOD Music.
However, upon her request, she was informed that only Kanye West could terminate her contract. Since then, Kacy Hill attempted to contact Ye; however, she couldn’t get in touch due to his busy schedule.
“At that time, [Kanye] decided he didn't want to use an email. And he also didn't have an assistant. So, I was like, that is so crazy. And so, for like six months of my life, and this is a true story, I'm not exaggerating anything. It's crazier than I could even tell it. For like six months of my life, I went to Sunday Service,” she told the audience.
Kacy Hill added how despite all attempts, her efforts to track down Ye persisted until she managed to “corner” him in his office in Calabasas, California, where he obliged her request.
“He was like, 'Okay, what do I need to do?' And I was like, 'You can text literally anyone and say that I'm done.’ And so he did, and he texted someone and said I was done, and I was done.”
She also mentioned how Kanye suggested that she turn her second record into a “gospel song” despite her moving on from his label.
Kacy Hill was a backup dancer for Kanye West’s The Yeezus Tour
Kacy Anne Hill was born in May 1994 in Phoenix, Arizona, where she grew up and attended the Arizona School for the Arts. She began her music career at a young age and played oboe and saxophone in her high school choir.
However, she moved to Los Angeles after high school graduation to pursue modeling and soon became the face of American Apparel. Later, she independently launched her debut non-album single in 2014 titled Experience.
Around this time, Kacy Hill was a backup dancer for Kanye West’s The Yeezus Tour and provided him with a copy of her already commercially successful song. He was impressed with her talent and soon signed her to his GOOD Music label.
Under the label, the indie-pop artist released several EPs, singles, and an album, including Bloo, Like a Woman, Hard to Love, Dinner, and Like a Woman.
In 2019, she announced her exit from GOOD Music and continued releasing music independently. In July 2020, she unveiled her second album, Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again, followed by Simple, Sweet, and Smiling in October 2021 and Bug in May 2024.
Over the years, she also appeared in the music videos of other artists, including Travis Scott (for 90210), Kid Cudi (for Releaser), IDK (for Free Slime), and Cashmere Cat (for Europa Pools), among others. She also toured with Coldplay and Suzi Waterhouse.
Apart from GOOD Music, the 30-year-old also worked with other record labels such as PC Music, Nettwerk, and Def Jam Recordings.
