Meanwhile, the new cast members include Kyle Mooney, Jon Daly, Sting, Penelope Cruz, Cyrus Arnold, Fred Armisen, and Kristen Wiig.
Katy Perry plays a cameo role in the film, appearing as herself and singing just one line. Katy Perry had already teased her appearance a month before the movie's release when she posted an Instagram video of Katy Perry singing the song Relax which was heavily featured in the the original Zoolander.
Even Zoolander's hero Ben Stiller (who played Derek Zoolander) appeared in the clip, requesting Katy Perry not to sing the song. Watch Katy Perry's cameo below:
Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, and other cameos besides Katy Perry in Zoolander 2 explained
Zoolander 2 features a host of high-profile celebrity cameos like Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, Mr. Valentino, Susan Sarandon, Alexander Wang, and Jourdan Dunn despite barely breaking even at the box office.
One of the most significant cameos in the film was that of Justin Bieber. The Baby singer is murdered in the first few minutes of the story. According to protagonist Ben Stiller (via Vogue), Justin Bieber's cameo had to be shortened by five seconds to comply with censorship regulations.
Stiller also praised Bieber before the film's premiere in Sydney describing him as a person who could laugh at himself.
Benedict Cumberbatch puts on heavy make-up to the point of making him almost unrecognizable as he plays the role of a genderless artificial intelligence model called All.
With bleached eyebrows and center-parted long hair, the character delivers some iconic lines in the film, including "All is not confined by binary restraints" when asked about its gender. Actress Susan Sarandon from The Rocky Horror Picture also appears alongside John Malkovich.
The appearance of veteran designers like Alexander Wang, Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, and Mr Valentino establish Zoolander 2's position as a creative that not only spoofs the fashion industry but also gets their support.
Each fashion designer has a unique scene dedicated to their introduction in the film. They are also joined by British model Jourdan Dunn.
Finally, Anna Wintour, the editor of US Vogue has more dialogue in the film than most other celebrity cameos. She plays the spoof of herself and is even seen in a Chanel couture at one point. in a 2016 interview with Sydney Morning Herald, Stiller said,
“Anna was always supportive of the first movie and kept on asking me over the years whenever we crossed paths ‘When are you going to make a second one?’.”
“So when we finally decided to do it, I reached out to her and said ‘Hey, I'm going to do this’. She was just an incredible partner and really helped us get a lot of people to be in the movie, and was kind enough to be in the movie,” he added.
Zoolander 2 was nominated for seven 'Worst' awards in the Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture, Worst Director (Ben Stiller), Worst Actor (Ben Stiller), Worst Screen Combo, and others. Out of the seven, Kristen Wiig won the Worst Supporting Actress award.
It was also nominated for Choice Movie: Comedy at Teen Choice Award.
