Tim McGraw was the first single of Taylor Swift from her eponymous album, released in 2006. According to the pop icon, she penned the song while she was still a school-going teenager.

In the press after the song's release, Taylor elaborated on the song's writing process. In Tim McGraw, she writes about her real-life relationship that lasted for over a year. However, it was about to end because her partner was to go off to college. In the song, Taylor Swift lists the things that could make him think about her after their relationship is over.

"I was thinking about all the things that I knew would remind him of me. I didn't really think of Tim McGraw personally when I wrote this song. It was a song where I was listing personal things. One of things that I listed was that my favorite song is by Tim McGraw," she explained in an interview with Great American Country.

"After school, I went downtown, sat down at the piano, and wrote this with Liz Rose in fifteen minutes. It may be the best fifteen minutes I've ever experienced," explained Taylor.

Tim McGraw was one of Taylor Swift's major breakout songs early in her career. It went on to win Breakthrough Video of the Year at the CMT Music Awards and was instrumental in kickstarting her career as a musical icon.
