Nicki Minaj has worked for more than a decade to establish herself as the queen of rap. Since she arrived in the industry in 2007, Minaj has recorded five studio albums with the sixth one on the way, gone on four headlining tours, and won various achievement awards, including the MTV Vanguard Video Lifetime Award.
Throughout these years, the Only rapper has also received opportunities to display her acting skills. In 2014, Minaj was cast as Lydia in Nick Cassavetes' The Other Woman, the feisty assistant of Carly Whitten (played by Cameron Diaz).
The 2014 rom-com movie was a major Box Office success, grossing $196.7 million.
Nicki Minaj's character plays both an assistant and a confidante for Diaz in the movie
The Other Woman marked Nicki's debut in a live-action movie, where she played Lydia - the sassy, immaculately dressed assistant for Diaz, who played a New York-based attorney in the movie.
Besides being her assistant, Lydia was also a confidant, with whom she often shared the details of her personal life, including her romantic relationships. Lydia was the first person with whom Carly shared the news that Mark, the guy she was seeing, was married.
As the plot moved forward, Carly joined forces with Kate King, (played by Leslie Mann) Mark's wife, to take revenge on her cheating husband. They were later aided by Amber, (played by Kate Upton) who was the second girlfriend Mark ended up cheating with. As the three women planned and plotted to make Mark's life miserable, they also developed a close friendship.
In a CapitalXtra interview with Manny Norte soon after The Other Woman's release, Cameron Diaz was asked about her experience of shooting alongside Minaj. Diaz responded to his question with:
"I love Nicki. She was fantastic. She blew us all away. She, you know, was so funny, so natural... what she had to do was difficult; it wasn't easy, and she showed up and she just nailed it completely."
Two years after The Other Woman, Minaj was cast in the third installment of Barbershop
Nicki Minaj's role in The Other Woman, no matter how brief, certainly left a lasting impression on the film industry. Two years later, the Pink Friday rapper was cast in yet another movie, a franchise, with much longer screen time.
Barbershop: The Next Cut was released in April 2016, and saw Minaj play the character of Draya, a hairdresser hired by Angie in the salon. In the movie, Draya gets embroiled in a love triangle between Rashad (played by Common) and Terri (played by Eve) with all three of them working together at the barbershop.
Nine years later, on September 17, 2024, Eve, Minaj's co-star in the movie, published her memoir, Who's That Girl? - which revealed that the older rapper had started therapy before shooting alongside Nicki Minaj.
The Hey Mama rapper responded warmly to the revelation on X, calling it "groundbreaking" and indicative of her "emotional and spiritual maturity."
Nicki Minaj is currently on her fourth headlining tour, having returned to the US for its American leg on September 5. The Pink Friday 2 tour will conclude in Elmont New York, on October 11. Minaj has also announced her sixth album in the making - Pink Friday 3 - the release date for which will be dropped soon.
