Post Malone used to upload his songs to SoundCloud at the beginning of his music career. He debuted with White Iverson, which made it to the Billboard Top 100, and the rest is history. Malone's unique voice and personality were soon popular. However, before Austin Richards Post became popularized as Post Malone, he wanted to try metalcore music.
Malone's passion for music in high school led him to become the lead guitarist of the band, Ashley's Arrival. In 2010, the then 15-year old Austin tried out to audition as the guitarist for the metalcore band, Crown The Empire. During a conversation with Andy Leo, the lead singer of Crown, with Billboard in 2016, he revealed why Malone couldn't crack the audition. He explained,
"He tried it out, but his guitar string broke during the audition."
Was Post Malone part of a metalcore band?
In a 2016 interview with AltPress, Andy Leo, singer of Crown The Empire, confirmed that Post Malone had auditioned as the guitarist for the band. Andy also added that Malone and he had known each other previously. He said that he was in a band called "Drop Shot" and Malone was the guitarist in that band.
Andy continued to say that when the Crown was still in formation, he recommended Malone to his team members. He said,
"You have got to try this guy out, he was like my friend and stuff."
Andy revealed that after Malone's "guitar strings broke," Malone was "super embarrassed." He revealed what the other members thought,
"They were like, 'ya dude, I don't think he's that good.'"
Andy was all praise for his old friend, and even though they couldn't be in the same band, he said that Malone ultimately ended up following his dream by moving to LA."
The Sunflower singer also confirmed his friendship with Andy Leo. In a conversation with Howard Stern, Malone revealed that he had previously worked with Andy who is a "great" guy.
Post Malone had previously spoken of his love for the metal and rock genres. In a live chat conversation with Megadeth's bassist on June 11, 2020, Malone revealed his favorite metal bands. He said,
"I'd say y'all. I mean, Megadeth has gotta be the best for me. I love Megadeth, I love Metallica… I love… F***, man. So much sh*t... I love Pantera."
Post Malone's love for metal and rock is undeniable. Malone had taught himself to play guitar by watching YouTube videos and was inspired by metal music giants like AC/DC, Nirvana, Metallica, and many others. His body tattoos also honor metal artists like Dimebag Darrell, Kurt Kobain, and others. In 2020, Malone held a Nirvana tribute concert by live-streaming it on YouTube. The online concert raised more than $800,000 for coronavirus relief, per Billboard.
If Malone's strings of the guitar had not broken, he perhaps could have been part of Crown The Empire. However, Post Malone has gone on to build a unique pop music career while continuing to nourish his love for metal music. Other than the Nirvana tribute in 2020, Malone has also revisited his heavy metal roots during jam sessions.
The 29-year-old rapper has covered various rock songs, such as Pantera's Walk and Metallica's Nothing Else Matters. He has also collaborated multiple times with Ozzy Osbourne, the lead singer of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath.
