Rihanna is a mother of two, RZA Athelston Mayers and Riot Rose Mayers. RZA was RiRi and her partner A$AP Rocky's firstborn. The couple welcomed RZA (pronounced Rizza) in May 2022 and Riot in August 2023. RZA's unique name had particularly caught people's attention.
In July 2023, People obtained the birth certificate for their son that pays homage to producer and rapper RZA, whose real name is Robert Fitzgerald Diggs. In a conversation with CNN, Robert expressed his excitement after learning that RiRi and Rocky had named their child after him. He said,
"[It's] a great honor to know that there’s another generation that’s not even of my own household that feels the strength and the inspiration of that name."
How did Rihanna and A$AP Rocky come up with a unique name for their firstborn?
Rihanna's firstborn's name was only revealed almost a year after his birth. His name had been kept a secret, even in Rihanna's Instagram posts where she shared photos from their British Vogue shoot. The Where Have You Been singer posted a series of photos and addressed RZA as "baby" and "son". She captioned the photos as,
"My son so fine! Idc idc idc [I don't care]!"
She added,
"How crazy both of my babies were in these photos and mommy had no clue."
The name is a tribute to the leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, an American hip-hop collective. In a conversation with CNN, Wu-Tang's RZA revealed that "RZA" is not only "a name, it is a title." He added,
"It’s an honor and I salute her and A$AP and their family. All the blessings in the world from me."
Other than the tribute to Wu-Tang, RZA also follows the name trend in Rocky's family. Rocky was born Rakim Mayers and his sister as Erika Mayers. The siblings had been named after rap duo, Eric B. & Rakim.
The Umbrella singer also posted a photo of A$AP Rocky and RZA and captioned it,
“My Bajan boyz…🇧🇧❤️"
At the premiere of Savage X Fenty, RiRi spoke about RZA's personality with Entertainment Tonight. She described him as a "happy and amazing" baby. She also talked about one of her favorite motherhood moments. She revealed that "seeing his morning face" makes her day. She added,
"Seeing a baby with, like, little bags and waking up and they're just, like, startled. They're trying to figure out where they're at. It's the cutest, it's my favorite part of the day."
Just less than a year after giving birth to RZA, Rihanna announced her second pregnancy during the 2023 Superbowl halftime show. She became the first pregnant woman to headline the show. RZA now has a younger brother, Riot. In 2023, while talking about life with kids, Rihanna told British Vogue,
"Oh, my God, it's legendary. It's everything. You really don't remember life before, that's the craziest thing ever."
Rihanna is maintaining her work-life balance with her two babies and a successful business, Fenty Beauty. While the singer has not denied plans about more children, the singer and actress is currently prioritizing her work.
