Phoenix was one of the bands that performed at the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024. The indie rock band, which features Thomas Mars taking the lead, was a major highlight of the event as they performed on a few of their hit singles.
They were later joined by Ezra Koenig, who has been a part of another band, Vampire Weekend. According to Vogue magazine, the audiences were told to maintain a distance from the stage. However, there was a huge crowd of people gathered near the stage who wanted to click pictures and sing along.
Apart from Phoenix, French music duo Air was another attraction at the event. The presence of both bands was confirmed a few days before the ceremony by the executive director of Paris Olympics 2024, Thierry Reboul. Reboul said in a statement:
"We've tried to champion French talents from the start even if we had international stars (Celine Dion and Lady Gaga); each time it was promoting a French artist nevertheless. We always have in mind to turn the spotlight on our country, of course."
Reboul additionally spoke up on the reason behind bringing French artists to perform at the ceremony, saying that their work left a lot of impact on the music industry.
Phoenix has been active since 1995 and they have seven albums in their credits. Their debut album, United, was released in 2000 and received a positive response. The group also won a Grammy Award in the category of Best Alternative Music Album in 2010.

The famous band's performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 closing ceremony helped their fans to recall and enjoy three of the most famous singles. The group started their performance with Lisztomania and the athletes were spotted dancing as the music continued to play on stage.
DJ Kavinsky alongside singer Angele then arrived on stage to perform the song Nightcall with Phoenix. The band's next performance was on If I Ever Feel Better and it ended with a duet as Ezra Koenig came to join them.
This was followed by another performance on the single, 1901. As mentioned, Air was another French band to appear at the event and they also joined in to perform on the song, Playground Love.
Phoenix addressed their experience of performing at the ceremony in a statement, saying that they were happy to have been able to celebrate with athletes and the audience in Paris. They further stated:
"It was a wonderful moment to have been invited to take the stage with our friends from France and around the world, honoring the French spirit and remaining true to our motto: Liberte, Egalite, Phoenix! We are thrilled to both pass the baton to the Paralympics athletes and to Los Angeles for the forthcoming 2028 games."
There was a lineup of other artists appearing at the event, including H.E.R., who performed the American national anthem. The rest of the artists performing at the ceremony also included Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Billie Eilish, and Snoop Dogg.
Furthermore, Tom Cruise surprised everyone with his stunt as he arrived at the venue from the stadium roof. He took a motorcycle with the Olympic flag and a pre-recorded video started playing, where Cruise was seen skydiving and landing in Los Angeles with a parachute, adding the Olympics symbol to the Hollywood sign.
