Selena Gomez rose to fame with her role in Disney's Wizards Of Waverly Place which first aired in 2007. However, before landing her first major role, the Naturally singer made guest appearances on Hannah Montana and The Suite Life Of Zack And Cody. The latter aired from 2005 to 2008 and starred Cole Sprouse and Dylan Sprouse as Cody and Zack Martin respectively.
The show featured a host of guest stars, including Selena Gomez who appeared in an episode titled, A Midsummer's Nightmare which aired in 2006.
During the appearance, Gomez was scripted to kiss Dylan Sprouse and years later in interviews, she revealed that not only was it her first kiss in life, but also one of the most awkward ones. Gomez described the day of the filming to Kelly Clarkson as "one of the worst days" of her life on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Selena Gomez talks about her awkward kiss on The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody
Selena Gomez was just 12 when she first made her guest appearance on The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody. The Come & Get It singer played Grace, who gets caught in a love triangle with Zack and Cody. Gomez was scripted to kiss Zack about which she candidly spoke with Kelly Clarkson on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2020.
Gomez talked about her recent visit to Grand Prairie, her childhood home, and reported that the current resident welcomed her in. The resident went on to show Gomez a spot where she had written that she was in love with Cole Sprouse. Gomez told Clarkson that although she had a crush on Cole, her first kiss was with his twin brother Dylan Sprouse.
Previously in an interview Twist magazine, Gomez had called it the "most awkward kiss in the world"
Clarkson was surprised by The Wizards Of Waverly Place alum's description and asked,
"Your first kiss was with a stranger and an actor?"
Selena Gomez laughed and added,
"On camera."
Gomez also described the kiss, but was glad that Dylan was an "awesome guy". She went on to explain why the kiss was awkward,
“I actually leaned in to kiss him, and I had my eyes closed a little too early and I ended up missing, like, half of his lips."
While Disney set the foundation for Selena Gomez's acting career, she has also reportedly spoken about her negative experiences during those days.
In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2023, Gomez revealed that she is not "ashamed" by her past, but sometimes feels "triggered" by it. She also talked about the "pressures" of being a Disney star and a role model. However, Gomez has worked on building an identity that is separate from Disney and reported,
"I think being the best role model is being honest – even with the ugly and complicated parts of yourself.”
Before bagging her first major role as a protagonist in Disney's Wizards Of Waverly Place, Gomez also had a guest appearance in Hannah Montana and The Suite Life Of Zack & Cody.
Wizards of Waverly Place is centered around Gomez's character Alex Russo, who is born into a family of wizards and must navigate her fantastical and regular life side by side. The Disney fantasy teen sitcom aired from 2007-2012.
