Selena Gomez transitioned from Disney shows to Hollywood by starring in movies such as Spring Breakers and Behaving Badly. In 2016, Gomez played Madison, a sorority president in the comedy movie Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Directed by Nicholas Stoller, Neighbors brought Zac Efron and his frat house against a next-door neighbor couple, played by Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne.

Neighbors 2 brings the trio back and Selena Gomez plays the president of a sorority called Phi Lambda. Gomez's role stands in contrast to the film's other protagonist, Shelby played by Chloe Moretz. Although brief, Gomez's character sets the plot of the movie as a new sorority comes head to head with Efron, Rogen, and Bryne.

Selena Gomez plays the role of Madison, a president in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. The Wizards Of Waverly Place alum heads a super-traditional sorority club, Phi Lambda. Madison is introduced as a picture-perfect and rule-abiding leader. At the start of the movie, Selena Gomez's character conducts the introduction meeting for new members of the sorority.

Gomez's character brings to notice the club's strict rules, including no partying and using substances in the sorority. The restrictive nature eventually drives the film's protagonist, Shelby played by Chloe Moretz to start a new sorority, Kappa Nu. The sorority defies the traditional rules set by Selena Gomez's character and highlights the divide in the sorority system.

Shelby starts the sorority next to her neighbors, Mac Radner (Seth Rogen) and Kelly Radner ( Rose Byrne) who want to end the new sorority. In their mission, they onboard Teddy Sanders (Zac Efron), a former president of a sorority. Although Selena Gomez's screen time in the movie is limited, she sets the scene for contrasting values and pushes Shelby to set up her rule-defying system. Unlike Shelby, Gomez appears primarily during the start of the movie and doesn't go to war with the 'neighbors'.

In 2016, Zac Efron and Seth Rogen spoke about the film with Entertainment Tonight. They also spoke about how "great" and "super talented" Gomez was during the filming. Zac shared,

"She's awesome."

He cracked up when Seth Rogen described her as "tiny". In an interview with Variety in 2016, Gomez spoke about working on another film, The Fundamentals Of Caring, and also gave further insight into her role in Neighbors 2. She revealed,

"I’m just in the beginning. I’m kind of the opposite of what Chloe Moretz would be. I’m the pompous, over-the-top obnoxious sorority president."

She added,

"We’re doing obnoxious things like studying in our bikinis. That’s as risqué as we get."

Gomez also talked to Variety about how she has just "touched the surface of acting" and disclosed that she is open to more acting roles in the future. Almost a decade later, Gomez has played the protagonist in award-winning movies, such as the Spanish Musical, Emilia Perez.

Selena Gomez's role in Neighbors 2 is brief and yet sets up the contrast for Chloe Moretz's character to fuel a rebellion. In an interview with People, Gomez revealed that she was ready to drop her Disney image and find "her own path". Gomez added that although she is not ashamed of her past, she wants to get out of her comfort zone.
