Selena Gomez became popular when she starred as Alex Russo in Wizards of Waverly Place. The Lose You To Love Me singer made a guest appearance in Sonny With A Chance, starring Demi Lovato. Selena Gomez plays herself as an actress in episode 13 of the second season.
Sonny With A Chance aired from 2009 to 2011, and was not the first time Gomez and Lovato appeared together. The duo's friendship goes back to when they were just ten and appeared together on Barney & Friends.

Gomez appears as a celebrity in the episode and is hired by Chad Dylan Cooper (played by Sterling Knight), who wants to film a movie: Chad Dylan Cooper: The Chad Dylan Cooper Story. Chad decides to have the real So Random (a show-within-a-show) cast play their parts except for Sonny because he thinks she is difficult to work with.
Gomez is then cast to play Sonny Munroe. In the episode, Selena Gomez sees that Sonny and Chad like each other but deny it. She then plays her part, and eventually, Sonny and Chad reveal their feelings to each other.
In the end, Gomez leaves the set, saying they are perfect for each other, and she doesn't want to do the movie anymore because she will be on Camp Hip Hop (a parody of the movie Camp Rock).
Demi Lovato gained popularity with Camp Rock and went on tour with the Jonas Brothers. Years later, in an interview with WildChat Sports in 2020, David Deluise from Wizards Of Waverly Place revealed that Selena Gomez had supposedly received the offer for Camp Rock. Joe Jonas appeared on the A So Random Holiday Special episode and sang I Sing My Song For You with Sonny in the episode.
Sonny With A Chance aired for two seasons until its name changed to So Random and bid adieu to Demi Lovato's character. While Lovato told Harper's Bazaar magazine in 2020 that she is "no longer friends" with Selena Gomez, she noted that they have grown together and will always "share the love."
