Besides being a multiple Grammy-winning pop star, Taylor Swift has tried her hand at a few acting gigs, too. The 34-year-old songwriter has made several guest appearances throughout her career alongside juggernauts like John David Washington, Julia Roberts, Betty White, and many others. In fact, Taylor Swift has also won an Emmy.
One of her most prominent cameo roles came in the 2010 romantic comedy film Valentine's Day in 2010. In the film, Taylor Swift plays the role of Felicia Miller, a quirky high school teenager head-over-heels for her boyfriend Willy (Taylor Lautner).
Taylor Swift's cameo on Valentine's Day explored
Valentine's Day is a 2010 romantic comedy film directed by Garry Marshall featuring many couples and how they plan their fateful Valentine's Day. Although it wasn't a popular choice for critics, the film turned out to be a box-office success.
The film boasts a star-studded cast list, including Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Eric Dane, Hector Elizondo, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, George Lopez, Emma Roberts, Taylor Swift, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Taylor Lautner, Ashton Kutcher, Topher Grace, Jamie Foxx, Patrick Dempsey, Bradley Cooper, and Kathy Bates.
Taylor Swift made her acting debut with Valentine's Day. In the film, she plays Felicia Miller, a hilarious and clumsy high school teenager who is the love interest of her real-life then-boyfriend, Taylor Lautner's character Willy. Felicia and Willy are a budding pair in the film and have mutually agreed not to have sex and wait for the right time.
Longtime Taylor Swift fans were also aware of the real-life relationship between Taylor Swift and Tayler Lautner. Therefore, their onscreen romance felt even more amplified in the eyes of fans.
Taylor also composed an original track for the film Today Was A Fairy Tale. The musical number was widely appreciated and became one of the most iconic tracks of the film.
In a 2009 interview on the sets of Valentine's Day, Taylor Swift described how she got the role.
"I got a phone call from Gary Marshall saying, 'Taylor, I want to have lunch or breakfast with you. I really want you to be in this movie. Will you let me write a part for you,' and I could not believe it," explained Taylor.
Taylor also explained that she didn't have the time for a big part then. Therefore, Garry Marshall cut it and shortened the part to fit her schedule.
"I couldn't believe it because I didn't have the time to be a big role in this movie. Gary was going to write in a small role for me," she added. "It blew my mind."
Valentine's Day was a box-office success despite critical reviews
Valentine's Day made $52.4 million in its first week and went to the number one spot over the weekend. The film was released with classics like Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and The Wolfman. Despite the competition, it managed to clinch the record of the third-highest opening weekend that month and the second-highest-grossing President's Day release.
However, Valentine's Day was heavily criticized by critics. With a mere 18% positive reviews and a 4/10 rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was severely criticized for its lack of plot progression.
"Eager to please and stuffed with stars, Valentine's Day squanders its premise with a frantic, episodic plot and an abundance of rom-com cliches," read the official review of Rotten Tomatoes.
Metacritic concluded that the film was 'unfavorable' by the audience and gave it a score of 34/100.
"The effect of all those spinning songs, stars and scenarios is merry-go-round-like, producing a sort of dizzying collage that no doubt some will adore, while others will just get nauseous," commented Los Angeles Times journalist Betsy Sharkey.
Meanwhile, The Philadelphia Enquirer's Carrie Rickey compared the romantic journeys of the 'very attractive people' in the film to the meeting and diverging of interstates through California's Southland. Another film critic, Mark Kermode, described the movie as a 'greeting card full of vomit.'
Rolling Stones film critic David Cronenberg described the film as a 'date movie from hell,' while Dasy Doyle from The Guardian argued that Valentine's Day was the 'worst film ever made.'
Despite the bashing, Valentine's Day earned $110 million in the United States and an additional $106 million in the foreign market. Therefore, the film's final collection amounted to a whopping $216 million worldwide.
Taylor Swift's other roles include a cameo in the 2022 film Amsterdam, singing roles in the musical film Cats (2019), and Hannah Montana: The Movie (2009). She also had her biggest acting role as Rosemary in The Giver (2014) and lent her voice to the character Audrey in the animated film The Lorax (2012).
