Bad Bunny's songs were discovered on SoundCloud by Puerto Rican music producer DJ Luian. In 2016, Benito was signed to the label Hear This Music and went on to deliver Billboard chart-topping hits such as, I Like It with Cardi B and J Balvin. As he began to gain fame, Benito stuck with the stage name, Bad Bunny and showed E! the picture that gave rise to the name.

The singer revealed that he was six years old and very upset when he was asked to dress up as a bunny. The picture showed a grumpy Benito dressed in a white bunny costume. During an Urban Car Pool interview in 2018, Benito reported that the idea to keep his name Bad Bunny came to him when he had just started "music". He wanted to keep a name that no one has used in the "history of the genre." He added,

"It is a character or a brand. The bad, or evil, rabbit, as people want to call it."

During an appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, Benito talked about his stage name and reported that he wanted to conceal his identity by wearing a mask. He explained,

"I never wanted to be so famous, but then I just went with the flow."

He added that he went with his stage name Bad Bunny because no matter how "bad" he acts, he will always have a cute name. He said,

"That’s me! Because I’m a good guy. I’m cute."

Benito also strikes a pose before continuing his conversation with Corden. Benito and Corden were also seen jamming with on Benito's hit songs Dakiti, I Like It, Tití Me Preguntó. They also sang the chorus of Break Free by Ariana Grande and Benito noted that it is the only English song that he knows the lyrics of.

In 2023, Bad Bunny became the first Latin artist to headline the Coachella festival. A childhood picture helped Benito form a professional identity like no other in the reggae industry.

In an interview with Vogue, while answering 73 questions in April 2024, Benito revealed that he doesn't have the costume anymore, but still has the "picture. Apart from his music career, Benito was also appointed as the co-chair for the 2024 Met Gala, alongside Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, and Zendaya.
