Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, professionally known as Bad Bunny, is a Puerto Rican singer and rapper. The singer is recognized for his Latin rap or reggaeton music and his quirky fashion looks.
From a prosthetic third eye to wearing a silver coat embellished with 13,000 Swarovski stones, Benito has not been shy of experimenting with his looks. In an interview with E! Times in 2021, Bunny revealed his love for fashion and stated,
"I'm focused on my music, my career, everything, so it's one of my goals to dedicate my time to fashion."
During his appearance at the American Music Awards in 2018, Benito sported a third eye on the pre-show red carpet and onstage during the performance of Cardi B’s I Like It alongside J Balvin.
The third eye became a part of Bunny's aesthetic and is credited to the work of the Puerto Rican illustrator, Sergio Vazquez. The third eye persona was primarily used to promote Benito's debut album, X100PRE.
Sergio Vazquez's poster that changed Bad Bunny's aesthetic
Sergio Vazquez was initially commissioned to create the poster for Bad Bunny's Homecoming concert in San Juan in March 2019. When Benito sported a third eye during the American Music Awards in 2018, the audience was eager to know its meaning.
In a quick chat with Power106 FM, Bunny claimed that it is "a powerful eye to see everything, the truth."
The third eye caught everyone's attention and has been credited to Sergio's poster for San Juan. The artists brought the eye to life with a colorful and fiery mix of arrows and pathways swirling around the rapper’s image. In an exclusive interview with Remezcla in 2018, Vazquez revealed that he was hired by Buena Vibra, the Puerto Rican creative agency commissioned by Bad Bunny.
He added that the initial instructions for the poster were "ambiguous" and "the third eye was born" in his first draft.
He met Bad Bunny in the Dominican Republic to discuss artwork plans and noted that it was a "very informal and cool" conversation. He reported that Bunny wanted "something like that" and they ended up talking about the art and music for hours. He added,
"More people like my style right now because Bad Bunny made it OK to have that style."
According to Remezcla, Vazquez is part of a community of independent illustrators and artists and has previously designed for other musicians and indie fests, including Bronson Fest in Puerto Rico.
He has also worked for corporate clients like the Compañía Cervecera de Puerto Rico and its brands Malta India and Medalla Light.
Vazquez described the challenges of being an independent artist in Puerto Rico. He explained,
“You have to know how to do everything; you have to be a Swiss Army knife. You have to work in styles you don’t love, and try to squeeze in your own thing within that."
Sergio Vazquez eventually created the cover for Bad Bunny's debut album, X100PRE. As an independent artist in Puerto Rico, Vazquez has experienced his share of difficulties. However, after Bad Bunny's seal of approval, there has been an increased interest in his work.
Benito has used the third eye as an integral part of his personality. As part of the digital promotion, he also collaborated with Spotify to create El Ojo which provided personal forecasts in celebration of his debut album.
