Beyoncé made headlines in 2018 by being the first woman of color to headline the Coachella event. The performance garnered almost half a million views on YouTube when it was streamed live and has since been declared the most live-streamed musical event in history.
Queen Bey's performance at Coachella 2018 was historic because the singer dedicated the entire performance to paying homage to black people and their contribution to America's pop industry. Furthermore, it marked her reunion with Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams after twelve years.
The Cowboy Carter singer was criticized by many fans when she called off her scheduled performance at Coachella 2017. She had to pull out of the performance because she was eight months pregnant with her twins.
Why was Beyoncé's Coachella 2018 performance special?
After making fans wait for two whole years, Beyoncé pulled off a Coachella headline that has been described by the New York Times as the epitome of a "meaningful, absorbing, forceful, and radical performance."
The Cowboy Carter singer ascended onto the stage for a two-hour extravaganza in a setting curated according to the theme of HBCUs, i.e., Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Donning a golden-yellow t-shirt and silver boots and accompanied by a huge marching band, Queen Bey's set had the grandeur to make a statement from the beginning.
The band was a congregation of current and former HBCU performers, and they sang songs of historical importance, like Nina Simone's Lilac Wine and the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, which has been the go-to musical number for all Black gatherings across the United States in history. The occasion was even more special when the audience was treated to the unthinkable reunion of Destiny's Child almost twelve years after they had disbanded.
Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined Queen Bey onstage. They joined vocals for Bey's iconic songs, like Crazy In Love, Formation, Say My Name, and many others. They were later joined by Beyoncé's husband, Jay-Z, and sister, Solange Knowles, as they rocked the stage with their collaborations with the Queen herself.
Bey went above and beyond in her support for Black people in America. After her Coachella 2018 performance, she announced four $25,000 scholarships for students at HBCUs as a part of her BeyGOOD Initiative.
Beyoncé faced backlash after she called off her Coachella 2017 performance
Queen Bey made her pregnancy public in February 2017, and fans were quick to realize that she would be performing at the Coachella 2017 eight months pregnant. Despite the ordeal, a major chunk of her fanbase couldn't fathom that Beyoncé Knowles was bogged down by the medical sensitivity of being eight months pregnant with twins.
Actress Vanessa Hudgens even hyped Queen Bey at the Ellen DeGeneres show before her performance.
"I'm excited to see Beyoncé perform with twins. I mean, she'll kill it because she's Beyoncé. So her."
The announcement for the cancelation finally came through Parkwood Entertainment, stating that the singer would not be performing at Coachella 2017 but instead headline the next year's event.
"Following the advice of her doctors to keep a less rigorous schedule in the coming months, Beyonce has made the decision to forgo performing at the 2017 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival," revealed the Associated Press (via Vanity Fair).
The backlash from fans started instantaneously. Some called it a scam move and opined that there is no medical reason for not being active during pregnancy if there aren't any complications. Some of the reactions to her decision are as follows:
"You could have saved 100% by not buying a Coachella ticket when Beyonce announced she was Pregnant," quipped one fan on X.
"My dog before and after me telling him that he's replacing Beyoncé at Coachella," joked another fan while posting a meme-worthy photo of their dog.
"So Beyoncé isn't going to be performing at Coachella anymore? I almost bought tickets. God really had my back and my bank account," commented one user on X.
Others also joked about the people who bought tickets just for the Bey's performance and later got to know about the cancelation.
"Lol @ everyone who bought that Coachella ticket thinking was about to perform pregnant for y'all #youplayedyourself," commented one fan on X.
"Yo, you going to Coachella this year? Beyoncé: Nah, you?" joked another user.
"Beyoncé is so kind to give me a whole year to lose weight and get my money right to go to coachella next year. So kind," inferred someone.
However, members of the BeyHive can say that Queen Bey more than made up for her absence in the next year's Coachella, one of the most iconic moments of the historic show.
