A Missouri woman named Lisa Findley was arrested for an alleged scheme to procure the ownership of Elvis Presley's Graceland estate. 53-year-old Findley was arrested on Friday morning, August 16. According to the US Department of Justice, Findley allegedly orchestrated the scheme by falsely claiming that Elvis Presley's late daughter Lisa Marie had pledged the landmark as collateral for a loan that she failed to repay before her death.
Findley allegedly tried to extort a settlement from Presley's family by creating numerous false documents before announcing a fake foreclosure and auction of the estate. She allegedly posed as three different individuals affiliated with a non-existent lender named Naussany Investments & Private Lending LLC. The woman was charged with singular counts of mail fraud and aggravated identity theft.
Lisa Findley allegedly requested $2.85 million from Elvis Presley's family
Kimberling City, Missouri native Lisa Findley tried falsely procuring Elvis Presley's Graceland home and tried auctioning it off despite having no claims to the asset. According to a DOJ press release on August 16, 53-year-old Lisa Jeanine Findley also went by various aliases including Lisa Holden, Lisa Howell, Gregory Naussany, Kurt Naussany, Lisa Jeanine Sullins, and Carolyn Williams.
According to court documents, Lisa Findley allegedly posed as three different people who were all associated with a lender named Naussany Investments & Private Lending LLC, which did not exist. She claimed that Elvis Presley's late daughter Lisa Marie Presley borrowed $3.8 million from the investment firm back in 2018 with Graceland as the collateral for the loan.
However, Lisa Marie tragically passed away in January 2023 and Findley alleged that Marie could not pay back the loan and hence requested $2.85 million from Presley's family. To do this, Findley allegedly fabricated and forged a plethora of documents and signatures.
She allegedly forged the signatures of Lisa Marie and a Florida State notary public on fabricated loan documents and filed a false creditor's claim with the Superior Court of California in Los Angeles along with a fake deed of trust with the Shelby County Register’s Office.
On May 23 of this year, Findley allegedly went to the lengths of publishing a fake foreclosure notice and announcement of the estate's planned auction in the Memphis daily newspaper, The Commercial Appeal. She even allegedly forged court filings when her fake company was sued by Elvis Presley’s family.
When Findley's scheme went public, the Missouri woman wrote to the media, the Tennessee state court, and Presley's family that the person behind the scheme was a Nigerian identity thief. U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) Criminal Investigations Group Inspector in Charge Eric Shen was quoted in the DOJ press release as saying:
"Fame and money are magnets for criminals who look to capitalize on another person’s celebrity status,"
Shen claimed that Findley took advantage of the tragedy in the Presley family to prey on the heirs of the Graceland estate. Shen credited Postal Inspectors and their law enforcement partners for putting an end to the alleged scheme. U.S. Attorney Kevin G. Ritz for the Western District of Tennessee called Graceland a "national treasure". He was quoted in the press release as stating:
"This defendant allegedly used a brazen scheme to try to defraud the Presley family of their interest in this singularly important landmark."
He added:
"Of course, all homeowners deserve to have their property protected from fraud, and the Department of Justice will vigorously prosecute anyone who commits financial crimes or identity theft."
Findley was charged with mail fraud and aggravated identity theft. If convicted of aggravated identity theft, she faced a mandatory minimum of two years in prison. The mail fraud charge carried a maximum of 20 years behind bars. The Missouri native made her first court appearance later on Friday after her arrest.
