Nicki Minaj has gained immense success in her nearly 15 years of rapping career. With five studio albums, four solo headlining world tours, and Billboard-topping collaborations under her belt, Nicki has earned her reputation as the queen of rap.

Beyond her rapping skills, her fondness for pink is another globally-known trait of Minaj, leading her to often refer to herself as "Barbie," which is currently her Instagram handle's name as well. Early in her career, the rapper also created an alter ego who channeled the rapper's love for pink, called Harajuku Barbie.

In August 2009, Nicki Minaj was in a Q&A session with HipHopStan, where she was asked about the inspiration behind her Harajuku alter ego, the rapper revealed:

"I love the Harajuku culture."

Harajuku Barbie isn't Minaj's only alter ego. The Pink Friday rapper's other alter egos include Roman Zolanski, Queen Sleeze, Chun-Li, Nicki Lewinsky, and Onika, among others.

Harajuku Barbie is reportedly one of the Hey Mama rapper's most popular and longest-lasting alter ego. It was created before Minaj released her debut studio album— Pink Friday— in 2010.

Harajuku Barbie made her first appearance on Beam Me Up Scotty, the third mixtape Nicki launched, on the track, Best I Ever Had (Remix).

Elaborating on her inspiration behind the Harajuku Barbie alter Ego to HipHopStan, Nicki Minaj also talked about how she related to the culture, saying:

"The way [girls in the culture] dress, is the way I am on the inside. Free-spirited, girls that just wanna have fun... pop, rock-n-roll, whatever... you want to do, Hip-Hop. That's how I feel, and that's what my music is gonna feel like, when I do my album."

While the first part of her alter ego is inspired by Japanese culture, the second part finds its root in Minaj's love for Barbie. Just like Barbie, the Only rapper's fondness for pink is also reflected in Harajuku Barbie's personality. This alter ego is distinguished in her soft-spoken manner, with a hint of naivety in her rap verses.

Beyond her mixtape, Nicki Minaj has also confirmed the presence of Harajuku Barbie in her collaborative tracks, Bedrock (2009), a Young Money track featuring Lloyd, Tyga, Nicki, Lil Wayne, Drake, and Gudda Gudda, and Monster (2010), a Kanye West track featuring Jay-Z, Bon Iver, Rick Ross, and Minaj.

Nicki's fans also speculate her alter ego's presence in Your Love, I'm the Best, Check It Out, and Super Bass, from her first album, due to her soft voice featured in them. However, the Starships rapper hasn't confirmed it publicly.

Minaj's alter ego was converted into an actual Barbie doll in 2011

Nicki Minaj's alter ego was acknowledged and appreciated by the world-renowned toymaker, Mattel, in 2011. Mattel joined forces with the Anaconda rapper to create the one-of-a-kind Harajuku Barbie doll.

Nicki's Barbie doll was later auctioned off at Charity Buzz, with the bids starting from $1,000. The funds generated from its sale were promised to be donated to Project Angel Good— a charity that feeds people struggling with AIDS and HIV without any support.

The first collaboration between Minaj and the toy brand in 2011 was followed by a second one in 2023. When Greta Gerwig-directed Barbie movie dropped in July 2023, its soundtrack contained a song called Barbie World, featuring Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. Peaking at no. 4 on the Billboard, the song became the highest-charting track from the movie.

In the song, another Minaj-inspired Barbie doll designed by Mattel was featured, alongside an Ice Spice Barbie doll. Nicki's doll had her signature thigh-long blond hair with pink highlights, tied in a ponytail atop her head. The Swalla rapper's signature Barbie necklace was also present around the doll's neck.

While hints of Harajuku Barbie were visible in Nicki Minaj's first album, Pink Friday, the rapper went on to create its sequel album in 2023, Pink Friday 2. Earlier this year, Minaj also announced that instead of launching a deluxe version of her fifth album, she would soon be launching a sixth one, which will be called Pink Friday 3.

The Barbz eagerly await Nicki's announcement revealing the release dates of the upcoming album.
