Selena Gomez has now been in the acting industry for more than two decades now. The singer and actress landed Emmy award nominations in 2022 and 2023 for starring in Hulu's comedy series, Only Murders In The Building.
Gomez stars along with industry legends, Martin Short and Steve Martin. Interestingly in 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, Gomez revealed that she was not originally going to be cast in the hit series.

Why Selena Gomez almost wasn't in the cast in Only Murders in the Building
Only Murders In The Building is going strong, with the most recent season 4 coming out on August 27, per Variety. Creators of the show Steve Martin and John Hoffman had already casted Martin Short as the co-star, but Selena's character was not a part of the original storyline.
On Awards Chatter podcast, Gomez revealed that it was the "producers' collective idea" to have a female co-actress and one that has a huge generation gap from Steve and Martin. Gomez added that it was executive producer Dan Fogelman's idea to cast the Rare Beauty founder for the role.
The Wizards Of Waverly Place alum also reported that the team was initially worried about someone "younger" becoming a part of the team, in case they were too "annoying." However, the singer was deemed perfect for the role and she added,
“But I couldn’t have been luckier because they called me... It happened and I can’t picture the show with three men.”
Who does Selena Gomez play in Only Murders In The Building?
A major casting decision changed the show's destiny and has since then bagged various nominations and awards.
Selena Gomez brings to life Mabel Mora, who is a young artist in her 20s. She lives in a luxurious apartment where she is temporarily living and since the very start remains secretive.
Through the series, the audience learns slowly about her character and soon becomes best-buddies to Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short). Gomez adds color and excitement to the show with her mysterious character and is the "glue" to Charles and Oliver, as the former calls her in the show.
Costume designer Dana Covarrubias was also tasked with making Mabel stand out and her clothes also continue to be loved by the audience. Across the seasons, Gomez gets to act with various seasoned actors from the industry, including Meryl Streep.
In an interview with Hollywood Reporter, Gomez reflected on one of her scenes with Streep:
“I literally cried at Meryl just rehearsing. I thought it was so beautiful.”
