Selena Gomez's rejection of a role in High School Musical 3 marked a shift in her acting career
The success of Wizards of Waverly Place had a domino effect on Selena's acting career. Her roles expanded into Disney specials and a leading role in Another Cinderella Story, where she played Mary Santiago, an aspiring dancer.
While filming Wizards of Waverly Place, Gomez was offered a role in the Disney movie, High School Musical 3. The first movie in this franchise premiered on January 20, 2006, and became an instant hit. According to Capital FM, fans have speculated that Selena was offered to play Sharpay's assistant.
In an interview with Daily News, the singer and actress revealed that she had turned down the offer to be a part of High School Musical 3. She explained:
“High School Musical 3 is cute and I think it would be a great opportunity for someone else."
She added:
“I passed on it because I didn’t want to do it.”
In various interviews, Gomez has shared that she looked forward to dropping her Disney image. In Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue, Gomez revealed that she is not ashamed of her past but felt "free" of it. She stated,
"It's not that I'm ashamed of my past, it's just that I've worked so hard to find my own way. I don't want to be who I was. I want to be who I am."
The Rare Beauty founder further revealed why she didn't go ahead with High School Musical. She said,
“After Disney, I want to be taken seriously as an actress for many years.”

Gomez's acting career has not slowed down
While Selena Gomez turned down the role in High School Musical, she decided to shed her Disney image with Spring Breakers. The Come And Get It singer did not stop there and starred in Behaving Badly, The Fundamentals of Caring, and In Dubious Battle between 2014 and 2016.
Gomez didn't slow down during the pandemic and released her reality TV cooking show, Selena + Chef. More recently, the singer has been promoting the fourth season of murder mystery-comedy, Only Murders In The Building. The show's new season will likely debut on August 27 and release weekly episodes.
On May 25th, 2024 Selena Gomez also learned that she had received the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Festival. She won it with her co-actresses in the movie Emilia Perez.
