"I have it sounding pretty good!" — John Mayer on playing guitar without his left index finger

John Mayer had quite the challenge ahead when he broke the index finger of his fretting hand in an accident involving a truck door on Thursday, July 25. However, the singer took to Instagram to clarify that he would still be performing in the upcoming Dead & Company Sphere residency shows.

In his Instagram post, Mayer shared a picture of his bandaged index finger and wrote that the first thing that went through his mind when he injured it was how badly he needed the finger in a week. He needs all his fingers to play guitar, but Mayer specially called his left index finger the "team captain" of his fretting hand.

As mentioned earlier, Mayer revealed that the finger would heal perfectly but also would be "out of commission" for a while. However, the singer did not give up on his upcoming shows. John Mayer detailed:

"In the meantime, I have spent every day practicing guitar using the other three fingers and I think I have it sounding pretty good!"

He added:

"I’ve always felt like every part of me belongs to these shows, and it’s my responsibility to return to the stage each night without screwing up the equipment, and I’m sorry for the misadventure here. The power of the music and the love for these shows will prevail! See ya tonight ♥️"

John Mayer released the post on the day of the first show at the Las Vegas Sphere alongside Dead & Company, a band comprising members from the legendary Grateful Dead. Dead & Company's Dead Forever residency will take place August 1-3 and August 8-10.
