2023-24 All-Star first team is led by Nathan MacKinnon

The NHL just announced the 2023-24 All-Star team featuring big names including Nathan MacKinnon, Nikita Kucherov and Artemi Panarin. Surprisingly, Stanley Cup finalist Connor McDavid missed on the first-team honors this season.

Hart Trophy winner Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche led the First All-Star team with 873 points, including 160 first-position votes. Forwards Artemi Panarin of the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov were selected in the First-Team flanks. Panarin received 931 points, while the Lightning’s alternate captain received 935 points, including 187 first-place votes.

Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, who collected the Norris Trophy at the NHL Awards on Thursday, also received First-Team honors with 931 points. Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi also earned his First-Team selection with 769 and 110 first-team votes.

In goal, Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets secured his second First-Team honors with a total of 925 points, beating Canucks’ Thatcher Demko who finished with 410 points in the Second Team. Adam Fox and Cale Makar were the two-star defensemen who made Second-Team selections, while forwards David Pastrnak and Filip Forsberg made their way to the Second-Team flanks.

Despite his impressive 2023-24 campaign, Connor McDavid finished second behind Kucherov with 471 points (only 17 first-place votes). This is his second career Second-Team selection, having already made five First-Team appearances in his career to date.

Fans react to 2024 All-Star First Team selection

NHL fans were quick to react to the All-Star Team selections on the internet. Some found the lineup perfect, while others criticized the First-Team selections. Fans even pointed out that the selection format had "flaws" in it.

Following are some fan reactions from X/Twitter:

“Please explain how the top goal scorer in the league did not make either team and why did you not use the same lineup format for the All-Star Teams that was used for the All-Rookie Team?” wrote one user.
“Lol what is this BS,” commented one fan.

Meanwhile, some fans praised the All-Star selections. They congratulated the player in the comment section.

“Congratulations to all players on their great seasons,” wrote one user.
“This team🔥🔥🔥,” commented another fan.

Now all the players will be looking to regroup with their teams in the offseason and build on toward their respective goals for 2024-25. It will be interesting to see how the lineup changes by the end of the next season.
