As the 2024 Olympics approach, all eyes are on the world's fastest male 400m athletes, that include Letsile Tebogo and Quincy Hall. With the list featuring sprinters from across the globe and some promising times, fans are guaranteed an exciting race at the Games.
Most recently, Quincy Hall has added fire to the flames with his stunning performance at the Monaco Diamond League. With that, here's a list of the world's fastest male 400m athletes for this season.
#10. Charles Dobson
Charles Dobson currently sits tenth on the list of the world's fastest male 400m athletes of 2024, with the 44.38 he clocked to win silver at the European Athletics Championships in June. Outside of this blazing performance, the Brit has run the distance in two competitions this year.
At the 13th Savona International Meeting, his individual season debut, Dobson took gold with a 44.46. A little over a month later, he won the UK Championships with a time of 44.56.
#9. Vernon Norwood
Coming in at number nine on the list of the world's fastest male 400m athletes for 2024 is American Vernon Norwood. The sprinter is the reigning Olympic champion and four-time World Champion in the 4x400m relay, and his best performance of the year was a 44.34 he clocked at the Monaco Diamond League.
Unfortunately for Norwood, this performance came a little too late. Had he managed to stop the clock at 44.34 just two weeks earlier at the 400m U.S Olympic Trials finals, he would have finished second, securing an individual berth on the team.
#8. Lythe Pillay
The eight fastest male 400m athlete of this year is South Africa’s Lythe Pillay. The 21-year-old has dipped as low as 44.31 in 2024, shaving 0.5 second off his previous personal best. Pillay, a former World U20 champion, has had a stellar season, storming to the 400m U23 and senior national championships gold in March and April respectively.
#7. Letsile Tebogo
An unexpected name on the list of the fastest male 400m athletes of 2024 is Letsile Tebogo. The Botswanian is typically a specialist of the 100 and 200m, where he is a World Championships silver and bronze-medalist.
Tebogo has run the 400m only once this year, at the Asa Athletics Grand Prix 2, on March 18, but once is all he needed. The 21-year-old clocked a 44.29, good enough to win him gold and give him a spot on the year’s toplist.
#6. Michael Norman
Another American on the list of the world's fastest male 400m athletes of 2024 is Michael Norman. The 4x400m relay Olympic Champion opened his season a little late, running the Occidental Invitational in May. However, upon his debut of the year, Norman clocked a blazing 44.21, one of the best runs of this season.
After this, the 26-year-old went on to win the USATF Los Angeles Grand Prix, before competing at the U.S Olympic Trials. He finished second in the finals of the Trials, ensuring an individual appearance at the Paris Olympics.
#5. Alexander Doom
Belgium’s Alexander Doom joins the list of fastest male 400m athletes of 2024 after stopping the clock at 44.15 to win the European Athletics Championships. Outside of the European Championships, Doom has raced the 400m twice this year, once at the Rabach Diamond League and once at the Ostrava Diamond League. He finished first in the former and second in the latter.
Doom was also present at the World Indoor Championships earlier this year, storming to his first individual gold at the event with a time of 45.25.
#4. Bayapo Ndori
Fourth on the list of the world's fastest male 400m athletes this year is Letsile Tebogo's compatriot and Olympic bronze-medalist Bayapo Ndori. Running in April at the Kip Keino Classic, Ndori clocked a stunning 44.10, clinching gold with a big gap.
However, the 25-year-old’s form has tapered off since then. After his victorious outing at the Kip Keino Classic, he's run at the Doha, Rabat, and Monaco Diamond League, running times of 45.57, 44.59, and 44.71 respectively.
#3. Matthew Hudson-Smith
Coming at number three on the list of best 400m performances this year is Charles Dobson’s compatriot Matthew Hudson-Smith. After winning the 400m World Championships silver last year, the Brit had a worrying start to his season. He logged a DNF in his opening race of the year, and went on to clock times of 45.00 and 44.69 at his next two competitions.
However, Hudson-Smith was back in form by the Oslo Diamond League, clocking an impressive 44.07 while running in the Bislett Olympic Stadium.
#2. Christopher Morales-Williams
The second fastest male 400m athlete of this year is Canadian teen sensation Christopher Morales-Williams. The 19-year-old clocked a 44.05 at the SEC Championships in May, leaving everyone stunned as he stormed to the top of the podium. He later went on to win the NCAA Division I Championships June with a time of 44.47 seconds.
#1. Quincy Hall
Quincy Hall is the fastest sprinter ahead of the Paris Olympics, and it looks like it's going to stay that way until the Games. Two weeks after storming to the 400m gold at the U.S Olympic Trials, Hall won the Monaco Diamond League in a jaw-dropping time of 43.80. This performance makes Hall the only sprinter to dip below the 44 second mark this year. This also places him 13th on the all-time list.
