The U.S. Olympic Team has been the most dominant force at the Summer Olympics, and Paris Olympics 2024 will be no exception. Despite challenges from countries like the erstwhile Soviet Union, then Russia, China, and even the likes of Japan and South Korea, the American supremacy remains almost unchallenged.

Here are some of the sports at the Paris Olympics, where the U.S. Olympic team is likely to dominate the medal tally:

5 Sports where USA will dominate the medal tally at Paris Olympics 2024:

#5) Wrestling:

Before the Soviet Union [later Russia] took over, it was the U.S. Olympic Team that used to dominate the sport of wrestling. Apart from Russia, the Japanese wrestlers have also staked claim to the ultimate supremacy at the Summer Olympics, dominating the medal tally at the previous two Olympics.

In comparison, USA has finished only twice at the top of the medal tally [at St Louis 1904 and Los Angeles 1984], although they maintained a place in the top five for most of the editions, if not all. At Tokyo Olympics, USA finished 3rd overall for the first time in 20 years, with 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals in total.

However, this time, USA has a golden chance of regaining the supremacy in wrestling. Due to the IOC sanctions, the best of Russian wrestlers won't be present in either Greco Roman or Freestyle Wrestling, and except for Japan, there are not many nations that can offer significant resistance to USA in this discipline.

#4) Gymnastics:

Another sport where USA has a golden chance of dominating the medal tally is the sport of Gymnastics, especially the Artistic segment.

This is probably the final Olympics of Simone Biles, and she would love to end it on a golden high with at least two or more Olympic gold medals in her kitty. USA had topped the medal tally in Gymnastics at Rio Olympics in 2016 with 4 gold, 6 silver, and 2 bronze medals, and incidentally, all the 4 gold medals had one common factor : Simone Biles!

Even at Tokyo Olympics, despite the stiff competition, USA finished 3rd overall with 2 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals each.

The only country that can give some tough competition to USA in this sport is China, since Russia won't be participating in most of the events, thanks to the sanctions imposed by IOC.

#3) Basketball:

This is one sport where USA's dominance is absolutely certain. With the exceptions of Munich 1972 and Athens 2004, USA has managed to keep a clean slate in most of the editions of Olympic basketball. Even at Tokyo Olympics, USA almost swept the medal tally, winning 3 out of the 4 possible gold medals.

At Paris Olympics, the American teams will be aiming to win each and every gold medal possible. This will also be possibly the last Olympics for NBA icon LeBron James, and he would love to end his career on a golden high at Paris.

#2) Swimming:

In swimming, the question is not whether the USA will top the Olympic medal tally or not, but by how much. At Tokyo Olympics, the US swimmers topped the medal tally with 11 gold medals, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals respectively. After Seoul 1988, no country has managed to dislodge the Americans from the top of the medal tally.

At Paris Olympics 2024, swimmers like Katie Ledecky, Caeleb Dressel and Lilly King will be aiming to add as many gold medals as possible, making it one of the best performances from USA since Beijing Olympics 2008.

If Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky win all their events, they shall become the most decorated Olympic swimmers after Michael Phelps, who has literally dominated the scene from Athens 2004 to Rio 2016.

#1) Athletics:

At Paris Olympics, the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team will be aiming not just to maintain their supremacy in the medal tally, but also to extend it with as many world records as they can. In fact, the 120 member strong track and field squad of USA comprises one fifth, i.e. 20% of the entire contingent bound for Paris Olympics. Since Los Angeles 1984, USA has remained unbeaten in terms of the most number of Olympic medals from track and field. At Tokyo Olympics, despite getting lesser gold medals than Rio Olympics, USA managed to top the medal tally with 7 gold medals, 12 silver and 7 bronze medals respectively.

Despite sending 8 athletes lesser than Tokyo, the US track and field team shows a lot of promise in multiple events, including shot put, discus throw, decathlon, and above all, the sprint events. Let's see how many gold medals can Team USA bring back from track and field at Paris Olympics this time.
