Over the years, many Olympians have competed on the reality TV show Dancing With The Stars, with most of them going on to impress fans with their skills on the dance floor. Gymnasts have a special edge when it comes to rhythm, and many Olympic gold medal-winning gymnasts have made appearances on the show.
The most recent gymnast to star in DWTS is Stephen Nedoroscik, who is competing in the show alongside dance partner Rylee Arnold. As Nedoroscik aims to lift the mirror ball trophy, here is a list of all the gymnasts who have competed on the show.
Mary Lou Retton
1984 Summer Olympics gold medalist Mary Lou Retton competed in season 27 of Dancing With The Stars. The American boasts an incredible resume as a gymnast, having won five Olympic medals and three American Cup titles. On her stint appearing as a star on DWTS, Retton was partnered with Sasha Farber and placed ninth overall. Her best performance came when she danced the Charleston, achieving a personal high score of 26.
Nastia Liukin
Nastia Liukin rose to fame as a gymnast in 2005, when she won gold in the uneven bars as well as the balance beam at the World Championships. The same championships also saw her win silver in the floor and all-rounder. Two years later, Liukin won the 2007 World Championships team and balance beam gold before being crowned Olympic all-around champion at the 2008 Games. She appeared on season 20 of Dancing With The Stars, finishing fourth after several impressive performances.
Laurie Hernandez
Lauri Hernandez was a part of the ‘Final Five' gymnastics team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, helping the US to a team gold medal. Individually, she won a silver on the balance beam and took a break from the sport soon after. The 24-year-old appeared on season 23 of Dancing With The Stars and was partnered with Valentin Chmerkovskiy. Hernandez finished first on DWTS, making her the youngest celebrity to lift the mirror ball trophy.
Shawn Johnson
Aside from Hernandez, Shawn Johnson is the only other gymnast to have been crowned champion on Dancing With The Stars. Johnson has appeared on the show twice, once in season eight and once in season 15, the all-star edition. The first time around, the gymnast was partnered with Mark Ballas, storming to the win in a closely contested final. For her second appearance, she was paired up with Derek Hough and finished second.
Aly Raisman
Aly Raisman was a part of the USA’s 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams and helped the nation to team gold both times. Individually, she was the floor exercise gold medalist and balance beam bronze medalist in 2012, and the floor exercise and all-rounder silver medalist in 2016. Raisman appeared on season 16 of Dancing With The Stars, where she finished fourth alongside partner Mark Ballas. The gymnast's highest score was a 30 for her ‘rumba and freestyle’ performance.
Stephen Nedoroscik
Stephen Nedoroscik is the most recent gymnast to compete on Dancing With The Stars. The American rose to fame after his performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where his role as the pommel horse specialist caught the attention of fans, leading him to be nicknamed ‘pommel horse guy’. The two-time Olympic bronze-medalist is currently competing on DWTS alongside Rylee Arnold and currently stands sixth in the rankings.
Suni Lee
Suni Lee was a part of the 2020 US Olympic Team and stunned the gymnastics world when she stormed to the all-around gold. She competed in season 30 of Dancing With The Stars, where she was partnered with Sasha Farber and placed fifth. Her best performance was a samba for which she scored a 40. Since her appearance on DWTS, Lee has gone on to compete at her second games, where she helped USA to the team gold.
Simone Biles
Simone Biles is the world's most decorated gymnast, having won 11 Olympic medals and 30 World Championships medals. The 27-year-old competed on season 24 of Dancing With The Stars, where she placed fourth alongside partner Sasha Farber. Biles’ appearance on DWTS was the origin of her now-famous ‘smiling doesn't win you gold medals’ comment.
