Standing 6'9" and weighing 255 pounds, Skinner began his career at Baylor University. His performance there led to his selection by the Los Angeles Clippers as the 22nd overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft.

The NBA journey of Skinner involves playing for teams like the Clippers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Philadelphia 76ers, Milwaukee Bucks, Sacramento Kings, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, and Memphis Grizzlies. Skinner came back to the Clippers on July 31, 2008, and stayed in that franchise for the next season. He joined the Bucks for a third time in 2010 but was released in January 2011. He signed with Benetton Treviso in Italy and made the Memphis Grizzlies' roster in 2011 before being waived on December 29, 2011.
