Boyd Martin was born to Olympic Speed Skater Toy Martin and Olympic cross-country skier Ross Martin. He began riding from a very young age in his native country, Australia. At the 2003 Australian International Three-Day Event, He made his debut and won CCI5*-L with the Thoroughbred gelding True Blue Toozac. He relocated to the United States in 2007 to work as an eventing professional and served as the assistant trainer to Olympian Phillip Dutton for two years. In 2009, Martin began riding for the United States.
Martin has been a part of three Olympic seasons representing the U.S. First in the 2012 London Olympic Games, The 20216 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. He was a four-time member of the United States Eventing Team in the FEI Eventing World Championship. He was also a member of the silver medal-winning team in 2022 in Pratoni, Italy. He was also part of the gold-winning US team at the 2015 Pan American Games with Pancho Villa. He won team and individual gold at the 2019 Pan-American Games with Christine, Thomas, and Tommie Turner's Tsetserleg TSF. He has twice won the USEF CCI5*-L Eventing National Champion at the Kentucky Three-Day Event. He first won with Tsetserleg TSF and then in 2021 with Christine, Thomas, Tommie, and his own, On Cue. He became the first American to win a CCI5* since 2008 as he won the inaugural Maryland 5 Star with On Cue in October 2021.

At the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, Bound Martin was the top-finishing U.S. rider with Neville Bardos. Martin alongside Ying Yang Yo won the 2011 USEF National Eventing Championships at Fair Hill International CCI which Boyd had previously won in 2009. He also managed to finish 7th at the Burghley Horse Trials CCI4 with Neville Bardos. He was ranked 8th on the 2011 HSBC World Rankings and Neville Bardos was awarded the 2011 International Horse of the Year by the USEF. Boyd was awarded the 2011 Overall Rider of the Year by The Chronicle of the Horse. At the 2011 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, Boyd was placed 3rd and 8th with Otis Barbotier and Remington XXV. This was recorded among his best top ten finishes at the largest international events in the world.
Martin currently ranks 3rd in the FEI World Eventing Athlete Rankings.
