Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was relatively an underdog heading into the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials in 2021 behind former 400mh world record holder Dalilah Muhammad. She went on to stun the then-reigning Olympic and World champion, breaking her world record in 51.90s. Muhammad, who held the 52.16s mark, finished 2nd in 52.42s.

McLaughlin-Levrone went on to lower her world record to 50.68s. Leading up to the 2021 Trials, McLaughlin-Levrone had been running 60m and 100m hurdles, which she credited for her performances in the 400m hurdles and the world record run. As the Olympic champion heads into the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, she has more or less been practicing the same tactics.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has run 100m hurdles and 200m and 400m flat races this season before opening her 400m hurdles campaign at the Edwin Moses Legends Meet. She ran the second-fastest time of her career in the 100m hurdles clocking 12.71s and also clocked a personal best of 22.07 in the 200m at the Occidental Invitational. McLaughlin-Levrone then clocked 48.75s in the 400m flat, the third-fastest time by an American, at the USATF New York City Grand Prix.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran 52.70s in her 400m hurdles season opener at the Edwin Moses Legends Meet. While this world-leading time for 2024 was bettered by Femke Bol later in 52.49s, the 24-year-old has almost a similar, rather better build up to the Olympic Trials than she had in Covid-affected 2021 trials. The American is poised for a repeat of her world record performance in the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials 2024.

However, McLaughlin-Levrone needs to go at least two seconds faster than her season opener to break her own 400m hurdles world record time. However, after she clocked 52.70s, the Olympic champion expressed that she hadn't had much hurdles practice this year and could improve her time as the season progresses.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was earlier slated to run the 200m and 400m flat and 400m hurdles at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials. However, she scratched the flat races and will only run the 400m hurdles, the first round of which is scheduled on June 27.

McLaughlin-Levrone will feature in the women's 400m hurdles round one on June 27 at 6:49 PM, and will most likely overtake Femke Bol's 2024 world lead of 52.49s. The 24-year-old will then run in the semifinals on June 29 at 5:41 PM.

McLaughlin-Levrone will likely have shattered the world record in the 400m hurdles finals the next day at 5:29 PM. If not the world record, the Olympic champion will at least go under the 51-second mark.
