CJ Nickolas is an American Taekwondo athlete who will represent the US at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Nickolas was born on July 18, 2001 in Brentwood, California and was introduced to the martial arts at the tender age of three. As of 2024, Nickolas is ranked the number two in the 80 kg division. This made him qualify early for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nickolas started competing in Taekwondo competitions at the age of six. During his middle school and high school, he became interested in track and joined the track team which helped him become more athletic and improved his overall performance. He stuck to Taekwondo throughout his school years and excelled in it in the meantime.
Everything started to work in his favor in the year 2023, when he won the silver medal at the World Taekwondo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the Welterweight division. This was the first time an American male athlete won a medal at the World Taekwondo Championships since 2009. He won against Egyptian Olympic bronze medalist Seif Eissa in the semifinals. His incredible performance was an awakening moment for American Taekwondo as American athletes have been absent from the Olympic podium for Taekwondo since 2012. Notably, he is coached by Gareth Brown.
