Gabby Thomas once opened up about winning two medals in her debut Olympic appearance in Tokyo in 2021. The American had shared her thoughts and shed light on the mental resilience required to compete in the quadrennial games alongside some of the best athletes in the world.
Thomas, who graduated from Harvard, turned pro after signing a deal with New Balance in 2018. Since then, she has made steady improvements to emerge as one of the best sprinters in the U.S. She clocked 21.61s, the second-fastest 200m of all time at the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials to book a berth for her debut Olympic games in Tokyo.
Gabby Thomas competed in the 200m and the women's 4x100m relay at the quadrennial games. The American athlete won the bronze medal in the 200m with a performance of 21.87s. Furthermore, USA's women's 4x100m relay team won the silver medal where Thomas ran the anchor leg.
Speaking to anscape.com in August 2021, Gabby Thomas shared her thoughts on her performance in her debut Olympic appearance.
“I’m incredibly happy with how I performed. It just took a lot of mental strength and a lot of emotional stability to go out there and go through the rounds and keep our performance at the high quality that it was at trials. I was really confident in my ability and how prepared I was so that I knew that even if I had a bad day at the Olympics, that bad day would be good enough," she said.
“It was my Olympic debut,” Thomas said. “I was feeling a little bit like Wonder Woman if I do say so myself," she added.

"I didn’t understand what all that would entail for me. So now I’m dealing with these emotions of having finished just this [laughs] insane experience in my life that I was working for for years. And having that come to an end and then suddenly I’m kind of like thrown into this new world that I wasn’t really ready or prepared for."
Furthermore, she revealed how competing in Tokyo was a major highlight of her career and expressed her gratitude for being able to represent her country on the Olympic stage.
