He completed his schooling at Francis Parker High School and pursued his higher studies at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Muagututia was also a good basketball player, however, he chose volleyball in college. The 36-year-old kickstarted his professional career after his All-America career at UCLA. He has now married to Keisha Lehua since 2017 and has one daughter, Teahi, who was born in 2018. But he has had an excellent career in volleyball and has won multiple medals in the same.

He has won two medals in the Pan American Cup, one gold, which he clinched in the 2012 Santo Domingo, and one silver medal, which he bagged in the 2011 Gatineau. He also won a gold medal in the 2014 Florence FIVB World League. In the FIVB Nations League, the California native won three silver medals (2019, 2022, and 2023). He added another gold to his resume at the 2023 NORCECA Championship. His one of the latest wins was at the 2023 FIVB World Cup where he clinched a gold. He had also nabbed a silver in the same competition at the 2019 edition of the competition.
