The 2024 Summer Olympics will be hosted in the city of Paris, France, after 100 years; previously, they were held in 1924 and 1900, which was also the second iteration of the modern Olympics. It is slated to take place from July 26 to August 11 and will feature 329 events in 32 sports and 16 cities (and Tahiti).
The modern Olympic Games began in 1896, with 14 nations participating; the majority of them were European, with the exception of the United States, which sent 14 athletes in three disciplines. They took home 20 medals from the event, including 11 gold ones, which was a then-record.
Most recently, the United States competed with 615 athletes at the Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2020 and took home 113 medals, including 39 golds, 41 silvers, and 33 bronzes. The most successful Olympian ever is Michael Phelps, an American former swimmer with 28 Olympic medals, including 23 golds won between 2004 and 2016.
The U.S. has only missed the 1980 Moscow Olympics; besides this, they have always participated in every Olympics ever held since their inception.
