Simone Biles made Taylor Swift emotional with her bronze medal-winning performance in her last event finals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after withdrawing from all of the previous finals due to twisties, a mental health condition where gymnasts lose the sense of their presence in the air.
Biles faced severe backlash from the media and fans following her withdrawal from the team, all-around, vault, and floor exercise finals. With allegations of being 'selfish' floating around, the 27-year-old received a powerful and inspiring message of support from Swift ahead of her return to the balance beam finals.
The pop icon narrated a video of Biles to her song “This Is Me Trying” and stressed that the gymnast was a human with emotions.
“What do we want from our heroes? What do we expect of them? What do we need from them? What happens when they surprise us? When you have the attention of the world, everything you do takes on a bigger meaning. It can be a heavy burden. It can be a chance to change everything. Throughout the last week, her voice has been as significant as her talents, her honesty as beautiful as the perfection that had long been her signature. But don’t you see? It still is. She’s perfectly human. And that’s what makes it so easy to call her a hero,” Swift said in an NBC video (via US Magazine).
The 27-year-old executed a perfect piked dismount in the finals amid all the pressure surrounding her, earning an impressive score of 14.000 to win a bronze medal, a performance that had Taylor Swift in tears. Biles thanked the 34-year-old for her support on the following day, who in reply admitted to being left inspired by her resilient performance.
"I cried watching YOU. I feel so lucky to have gotten to watch you all these years, but this week was a lesson in emotional intelligence and resilience. We all learned from you. Thank you," she said.
The 14-time Grammy award winner has also supported Simone Biles and Team USA at the 2016 and 2024 Olympics with the gymnast also using her music in her floor exercise routines at the latter.
Simone Biles' floor routine at the 2024 Paris Olympics' was inspired by Taylor Swift's Ready For It?
Simone Biles used Taylor Swift's reputation album opener "Ready For It?” in her floor routines at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials and Paris Olympics. The seven-time Olympic champion's agent suggested her to use the song before her choreographer Grégory Milan combined it with Beyonce's music.
Biles loved the combination and topped the floor exercise competition at the U.S. Olympic Trials while performing to the mix before earning appreciation from Swift herself.
"Watched this so many times and still unready. She’s ready for it tho," she wrote.
Simone Biles performed on the combination at the Paris Olympics as well and won a gold and a silver medal through it. It was her fourth of the 2024 Games and 11th overall, making her the most decorated American gymnast in history.
