Dalilah Muhammad is the former world record holder in the 400m hurdles, and held the crown until the 2021 Track and Field Olympic Team Trials when Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone overtook her in Eugene. Muhammad had clocked 52.42s to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics while McLaughlin-Levrone set the world record in 51.90s.

Muhammad, who won the gold medal at the Rio Olympics 2016, was the most dominant force in 400m hurdles until the current Olympic champion took the baton from her at the 2021 U.S. Trials. The two met again in the finals at Tokyo Olympics, where McLaughlin-Levrone lowered her world record mark to 51.46s while Muhammad finished with a personal best of 51.58s for the silver medal.

Both Dalilah Muhammad and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone have declared themselves for the 400m hurdles at the 2024 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials. The first round of the women’s competition is scheduled on June 27 at 6:49 PM. While the world record holder is an overwhelming favorite to win the trials again, Muhammad could still pull off a surprise, though she hasn't looked threatening this season.

The 2016 Rio Olympic champion kicked off her outdoor season at the Texas Relays on March 30,2024. She raced in the 4x400m relays, where her team finished 4th in a time of 3:29.40. She didn't compete in April, and later on May 4, the 34-year-old ran her first 400m flat of the year. She finished outside the podium, clocking 53.53 for the fourth place.

A week later, Dalilah Muhammad started off her 400m hurdles season at the Jamaica Athletics Invitational Meet. She clocked 55.77s for fifth place. The Olympic champion competed at the USATF LA Grand Prix on May 28, and finished fourth in a time of 55.78s.

Not only has Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone raced more than Dalilah Muhammad this season, she has been posting blistering times over multiple events. The 24-year-old ran the second fastest time of her career in the 100m hurdles this season, in what was only her season opener.

She also set a new personal best of 22.07s over the 200m before nearly tying the American record over 400m flat. McLaughlin-Levrone ran the third fastest time by an American over 400m in 48.75s at the USATF NYC Grand Prix.

The reigning Olympic champion kicked off her 400m hurdles campaign at the Edwin Moses Legends Meet with a timing of 52.70s, second fastest time of the year so far. However, similar to Dalilah Muhammed, she has only raced the 400m hurdles once this season. Although she still remains an overwhelming favorite, Muhammad does have the capability to challenge her reign at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Team Trials 2024.
