Matthew Sharpe was born on July 24, 1991, and is a native of Campbell River, British Columbia, Canada. Sharpe's triathlon journey began at age 10 after being a competitive swimmer. In high school, he was the sole triathlete and had to train alone, often waking at 5 a.m. to run in the rain on Vancouver Island. He was inspired by Simon Whitfield’s gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Sharpe pursued his dream of competing for Canada. Sharpe has a passion for urban design and planning. Matthew Sharpe is a Canadian professional triathlete. He first made his mark in international triathlon for Canada at the Junior Pan American Championships in 2008. He finished ninth at the 2010 Junior World Championships. Sharpe competed in three consecutive U23 World Championships while also participating in elite races on the Pan American Cup and World Cup circuits.

His first international win came at the 2011 Pan American Cup in San Francisco. Sharpe achieved his first World Cup top-10 result in Edmonton in 2012. He competed in his first World Triathlon Series event in 2013 in San Diego. He represented Canada at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he contributed to a fourth-place finish in the mixed team relay. He secured an 11th position at the 2016 World Triathlon Series event in Edmonton and participated in his first ITU Grand Final.

In the 2017 World Cup, Sharpe placed in four top tens and reached a career-high 16th position in the ITU Grand Final. He was the top Canadian in the men’s race with a ninth-place finish and contributed to another fourth-place finish in the mixed-team relay at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Sharpe earned a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. During the race, he played a crucial role in setting up his teammate, Tyler Mislawchuk, for a strong finish by pacing the bike segment and briefly holding second place. Sharpe ultimately finished 49th.
