The origins of golf are heavily debated among historians, with similarities found in England, China, Persia, and France, but modern golf was found in Scotland in the mid-15th century. Regardless, golf debuted at the 1900 Olympic Games and was continued in the 1904 edition as well.
The participation of women was permitted, and individuals used to play in the match-play format, while the team events were held in the stroke-play format. Golf was scheduled for the Olympics in 1908 and 1920, but it was not contested in either year and was dropped.
An effort to reinstate golf as an Olympic sport started in the new millennium. Golf was given the go-ahead to be added to the Olympic Program after an Executive Board meeting in 2001. However, after being put to a vote in July 2005, the IOC session decided against adding golf.
Golf was finally added back to the Olympics in October 2009, during the 13th Olympic Congress. Men's and women's individual competitions took place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, followed by the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and are scheduled for the 2024 Paris Olympics as well.
