Former Naples athlete Malacchi Esdale has been part of the United States’ rugby team for the past three years. Esdale started playing high school football career at Naples High School where he played as a wide receiver and also began playing rugby with the Naples Bears Rugby Club.
Esdale was born in Delaware but moved to Florida with his grandmother to fulfill his dream of playing college sports. He had a brief spell playing college football at ASA College and then transferred to the University of Miami where he was unable to make it to the team. After his unsuccessful spell with Miami Hurricanes, Esdale moved to UCF where he played as a safety before quitting his football career.
While at UCF, Esdale played for the program’s rugby team before joining the Orlando Griffins. In August 2017, he signed with the Houston SaberCats and made his professional rugby sevens debut for the inaugural season in 2018. The following year, Esdale saw action in 15 games where he carried 95 times for 915m, with eight tackle breaks and 89 total tackles. He was called by the USA Falcons Sevens during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he was used as a reserve. In 2024, Esdale was named to the Paris 2024 Team USA roster and he aims to win the nation’s first Rugby Sevens medal in Olympic history.
